Hugh Marlowe Surfaces
Hitchcoc29 December 2021
I always liked Hugh Marlowe and his deep baritone voice. Here he is an honest man who puts truth ahead of self interest. He gets caught in a contracting scheme and puts his safety on the line. Good epiisode.

Co-operating Operator
darbski22 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** Yeah, I'm givin' it a 10. reason is good acting, and courtroom drama. Also, there should be a tutorial for the ladies on how NOT to use lipstick; c'mon, Leora!! I've seen this episode more than once, and every time, I wonder WHY Paul didn't just grab the dork lighting his cigarette by the necktie and pull him out of the way. Failing that, why not just bribe the switchboard operator for the number Leora was asking for? the room phones didn't have dials, did they? Nope. Plus, she was pretty, and Paul could have gotten a date and then, being co-operative... okay, we'll turn that over to a higher power.

Now, Hugh Marlowe was a very good actor, normally confined to smaller roles like this, betraying Klaatu in "The Day The Earth Stood Still", or piloting "The Leper Colony" in "12 O'Clock High". His talent, and great voice shone through and carried many a shaky plot. When Perry was talking to Hamilton, Burger was complaining about how it was gonna make ALL district attorneys look bad; Perry said it must gall him to know that he (Perry) had to pull his (Burger's) chestnuts out of the fire. Priceless.

I figured it was the wife who dunnit, or the despising step daughter, both of whom had excellent reasons for bumping the main creep off, BUT, NO !! someone that looked like he was clean, and "a friend". Like I said, they should've explored the sexpot telephone operator more deeply. As another reviewer pointed out, Perry was driving a beautiful black 1959 Caddie convertible; totally in keeping with his status; Della, of course, was prettier.

I don't know! I don't know!

Warning: Spoilers
****SPOOILERS**** While investigating the mobbed up North Port Hospital Project Waring City D.A the sparkly clean Brander Harris, Hugh Marlowe, is tricked into seeing that hot number Miss. Leora Mathews , Carole Mathews, in her hotel room who climes she has some very explosive information for him to see. The only explosives that Harris encounters is a bop over his head and his picture taken while Carole plants a big sloppy kiss on his lips. With the photo used to blackmail Harris he goes to see attorney Perry Mason, Raymond Burr,to help him find out just who set him up in this strange encounter in Leora's hotel room. It soon turns out that Marshall Scott, Bartlett Robinson, who together with Leora planned this whole event was found murdered with all the evidence, fingerprints, leading straight to Brander Harris! Who's now facing a murder change and has a lot more to worry about then just his his picture taken!

Who seems to be behind all this is the town's fair haired boy local newspaper editor James Castelton, Mark Roberts, who's being groomed for bigger and better things by Waring City power broker Cleveland "Cleve" Blake,Winton Graff, who's also the main man behind the North Port Hospital Project. With Perry defending his client Harris he uses his courtroom skills to stonewall the prosecuting D.A Hamilton "Ham" Burger, Willliam Talman, into actually doing the work for him in revealing who in fact murdered Scott and was behind blackmailing Harris.

****SPOILERS***** Perry's tactics in the end had Burger unknowingly get both Scott's actual murderer as well as his lap dog brown nose follower crack under the strain by not checking them out, in what they if anything had to do with the blackmail & murder trial, and handing them over to Perry on a silver platter for his brutal and relentless cross-examination. As it turned out it was a falling out of those involved in blackmailing the both innocent as well as naive Harris over the pay off money that lead to Scott's murder. And the person who murdered him was so sloppy in doing it, by quickly checking out and not covering his tracks, that even his #1 flunky, not wanting to end up in San Quentin's gas chamber, not only refused to take the rape for him but fingered him in open court!

The other side
bkoganbing28 August 2014
Perry Mason goes to the other side and becomes both a prosecutor and an attorney for a prosecutor, a small county District Attorney played by Hugh Marlowe who has convened a Grand Jury in his town to investigate kickbacks and fixes in the construction trade.

But those same forces are out to get Marlowe before he gets them. He's accused of the murder of his prime target a prime political fixer in the state. Of course this guy had a bunch of other people who would like to have done him in including his own wife.

In order to get Marlowe to turn himself in, Raymond Burr has to go to Marlowe's county seat and conduct the Grand Jury probe. He gets evidence implicating his own client which naturally makes things even tougher than usual.

William Hopper's Drake Detective Agency comes in mighty handy in the gumshoe department here.

Decent enough episode the first of many that Hugh Marlowe did for the Perry Mason Show.

Case of political corruption at its best.....or worse
kfo94941 May 2013
Even though this is a nice episode about political corruption and personal gain, the story did not play well on the screen. The viewer has to keep up with all the witnesses and characters as Perry makes his way through the case. By the time we get to the actual courtroom proceedings the story seemed confused by all the minor characters and testimony that has already been given.

The corruption involves the bribery of the building of Northport General Hospital. During the construction of the hospital shortcuts were taken on the materials which lead to bribes being given to overlook the problems. Now Brander Harris, a District Attorney from Waring County, is set to have a Grand Jury hearing into the bribes during the construction of the hospital. However someone is trying to discredit Harris by setting up a scandalous photo with the young DA and beautiful woman. Harris goes to Perry to help him uncover who was behind the picture.

But Perry will soon be defending Harris in court on murder when one of the main players of the hospital problem ends up dead and the evidence points to Harris as the murderer. Perry will have to navigate not only through the criminal court system but also conduct a Grand Jury investigation into the corruption of the hospital.

When we get to the end of the episode all of the interest of the show had withered. Perhaps if they had stuck with the murder instead of going on so long with the Grand Jury then the show may have been more entertaining. The story was not bad, it was the side show of all the characters and their actions that brought this show down.

The Case of the Fraudulent Foto
Prismark1026 August 2023
Dodgy businessmen, flunky journalists, crooked politicos. Nothing is new.

Brander Harris, a District Attorney from Waring County is investigating the corruption involved in the construction of a hospital. Bribes were paid, shortcuts were made the hospital did not meet safety standards.

Only Harris himself falls victim to a honeytrap sting. A photo with an attractive lady which finds itself in the desk of a journalist.

When one of the men involved, fixer Marshall Scott is found dead. Harris is arrested for murder.

Perry Mason finds himself defending a DA. As Harris is now out of action, Mason also acts as the prosecuting attorney in the Waring County corruption investigation.

A solid story but it gets a bit too confusing here and there with the various characters. At least there were a lot of suspects but it was not always clear as to how they were precisely involved.
