CBS should DVD Omnbus - esp this one on Bach
whall42-16 February 2007
This Omnibus show from 1957 has been lurking in my memory for (Yikes) 50 years, now. I was a tenth-grader, and Bernstein's exposition of Bach use of counterpoint, and it's contrast with musical forms that both preceded and followed it, changed my entire view of "classical" music, started me on the path to becoming a perceptive listener. I still remember many of Bernstein's metaphors in explaining the various melodic structures. This was a wonderful broadcast, and should be available, perhaps packaged as an add-on to Bernstein's Young People's Concerts. Whatever else you could say about Bernstein, he was a consummate teacher. This broadcast is a worthy companion to his Norton Lectures and his Young People's series. It would go into my DVD collection, next to Mass, West Side Story, and Candide.
