Lorenz Hart once asked a question in a song, "Wll Saroyan ever write a great play?" Only familiar with a few of those, all I can say about his works is that they are very deep and psychological and personal, and often perplexing. In the case of this one, are seen as a segment starring Helen Hayes and Burgess Meredith ( later done in its entirety in 1956), it starts off as one thing and becomes something completely different, and I can't imagine it being abridged. Meredith is a ky clerk working over the holidays, and when Helen Hayes comes in, he doesn't see her shoplifting. The floor Walker does, and questions Meredith over why there are no ties in the bin, detaining Hayes. Then he confronts her over her putting them in her big jacket, and what they end up with is a story of her life and how she likes ties. This is nearly two decades before she played the little old lady who stowed away in "Airport", so it's basically a rehearsal for the film that won her a second Oscar. Of course when you got stage that are inside Hayes and Meredith in the leads, it's going to be mesmerizing, but be aware that the play itself is just rather bizarre.
