This episode is about the effects of the past and a look toward the future. Each of the characters focused on is at a stage in their life where it seems disappointing. In Joel's case, he may have cancer, and to quote Tim McGraw, he begins to live like he is dying. Maggie meets her fifteen year old self who judges her harshly, saying that she has not accomplished anything she set out to do. Her alter ego is a snot. We meet a new barber in town who has connections with the most evil of people in his past. Chris and he are at serious odds. And Shelly believer that a chain letter has great power over her life.
