I was pretty much taken with the business between Joel and his father. Like men of his generation, it was easier to do than to say. His solution for everything is to fix it, physically. This way you can avoid the deeper things in life. We do get into the Native American mythos when Marilyn and Joel's mother have a rather interesting conversation. This part is well done. Now go to the brick, where Holling is all worked up because he has no interest in sports and will be unable to pass that on to his child. Shelley, in her normally stupid way, feeds the fire. How can he not admire hockey players and baseball players and so on. What if her ends up reading or collecting stamps and getting beaten up by the other kids? Anyway, the premise is ridiculous and many of the men are out of character, especially Chris who is about as accepting of what the world gives us as anyone. He is suddenly so into baseball that he can't think of anything else. The confrontations are not believable. Did anyone ever thing that all father's have their own gifts for their children. I collected stamps for a while and other kids couldn't care less.
