Yo, Diane!
Hitchcoc14 September 2021
There is a brutal murder (really?) of a young woman. A neighbor heard her arguing with someone. Her one time boyfriend gets the first nod and then it's off to the races. But what we've all been waiting for is the resolution of the custody case. It all hangs on the testimony of Frank's sister, who was sexually abused by her father (one of those seeking custody of the baby). Andy goes to see Diane Russell (in a cameo) and she goes to the sister. This is a pretty satisfying episode because there is real tension from beginning to end.

"Yo, Adrian"

Warning: Spoilers
It's episodes like "Yo, Adrian", the penultimate one in NYPD Blue's tenth season, that reminds you of why the show was and continues to be one of the best police dramas of all time. Sure, the quality of episodes fades in and out more these days than it used to, but when it's good, it's VERY good.

Powerhouse performance from Dennis Franz. It's a brilliant thing Franz does: there is the rough and tough Sipowicz and underneath, a vulnerable and emotional man, who has trouble expressing how he feels. Franz play both sides of that complicated character with aplomb.

Wonderful to see Kim Delaney return for an extended 'special appearance' as Dianne Russell. She works for the Special Victims Unit now - does she know Olivia Benson?

The Russell cameo isn't just for the sake of it. She plays an important part in the episode and in the McDowell/Sipowicz baby adoption arc as a whole. Her appearance made me think of the glory, halcyon days of the show, with Bobby Simone, Lieutenant Fancy, Medavoy and Martinez etc. What good TV times they were.
