Still bust a gut!
mm-3927 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Sheriff Lobo changed from a mean corrupt Sheriff ( B J and the Bear) to a corrupt, but nicer version of the Andy Griffen show. Perkins became the Don Knotts. Scheming Lobo has a great plan to buy a 550 hundred pound bass and create a fishing derby with Perkins guarding the fish. Add in an escape convict, the loot buried in the pond, a fake shark, and real shark all in the same fishing pond and comic gold. I watched The Day That Shark Ate Lobo after all those years and just found The Day That Shark Ate Lobo just as stupid and funny as when I was ten. My best friend Dwight and I watched and busted a gut. 40 years later this time with my wife I laughed so hard my stomach ached so much. Well written, directed, and acted for a very silly story. 8 stars. Worth watching. Time well wasted.

Believe It . . . . . . Or Not!

Warning: Spoilers
It was the pilot. Sonofagun.

Now I thought it was Christopher George and his wife, Lynda Day George, but of course, I see now it was Caren Kaye.

This episode came about because of the Jaws craze. It involved a fishing contest, and a mechanical shark that Sheriff Lobo decided to have put in the lake for the winner to catch.

I'm certain Lobo had the contest fixed somehow.

Well, Chris George was a criminal who had just gotten out of jail and now went with his moll, Kaye, to dig up the loot, but the spot they had buried it was now covered over by the lake.

For some reason (I can only deduce to scare people away), George turned a real shark loose in the lake.

Why the events took place at night, I don't know, but we find our cast out on the lake in a boat, with Chris George declaring very excitedly "you mean to say you didn't get that great white out of the water?" and then the boat gets tipped over and everyone has to swim for shore.

Oh, they all made it.

So I watched this episode, more because I hadnt gone to see Jaws in any theatre and this was my best chance at seeing a shark adventure, I thought.

What fascinated me most was the original trophy, before the mechanical shark.

Apparently Lobo had obtained a gargantuan bass, I will deduce from the Gulf of Mexico (I will reveal my source later), and stuck it in the lake, perhaps with some intention of catching this fish himself, however he planned that. For those who don't know, the adventures of Lobo took place in nearby Georgia, Jimmy Carter's homestate.

Whatever he intended, it didn't take place, as Deputy Perkins (Mills Watson) accidentally tripped while carrying a rifle and struck the fish when it leapt out of the water, killing it.

But what a sight that monster was leaping out of the water! I suppose the fish was really fake. But the effect was very nice for this teen-ager.

I would have rather seen something about this giant fish than the goofy shark stuff.

Years later, I would obtain a calendar from the local newspaper. It would include several historical pictures of our state, but one stood out very well.

I would take this picture to work and it has been quite a conversation piece.

Taken in 1906 in Pass Christian, it shows Captain John T. MacDonald standing alongside the Black Sea bass he caught in the Gulf of Mexico, with a rod and reel.

The fish is 440 lbs, and measures 8 feet, 1.5 inches long and has a five foot ten inch girth.

The photograph is property of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

MacDonald's story made it into a Ripley's Believe It Or Not Article.

As I look at the picture at work, I recall this episode of Sheriff Lobo (didn't realize it was the pilot) and have always regretted the fish got killed.
