Debut for Rycott
colinprunty-116 October 2020
Another very good series one episode featuring the very first appearance of police officer Rycot and the unforgettable Scotch Harry. A good story involving some decidedly very dodgy currency snatched from a very young looking chap by small time bag thief Scotch Harry at London city airport. The story unfolds after Harry's dumb pal Stan cashes one of the notes at the Winchester club via Arthur obviously. This sets up some great scenes as Terry then minds Harry and Stan to safeguard the money. Good plot although some very wooden acting is displayed from the rather well to do villains in this episode which grates a little . That said we see Rycott in his first role as a rather out of character bent copper which is strange given how straight laced he became in later episodes. Scotch Harry and Stan are superb in this though and strange we only ever saw Harry again in series 5 or 6 minus his pal Stan in another great episode. He was such a good character that bounced so well between the two characters and he really enhances this episode given his natural comic chemistry with Arthur and Terry, a shame he wasn't used more. Great acting by the Scottish actor Phil McCall , easily one of the very best guest stars in this series . The later episode cleverly shows the respect Arthur and Terry gained from the initially cynical Harry in scenes shown the start of this episode. All in all a very good episode , series 1 really was the best of the bunch in my opinion .

The Smaller They Are...

Well it is not the most convincing airport scene. You cannot exactly walk out is terminal and on to a street in a London airport.

Scotch Harry is a drunk and a crook but strictly little league. He scores big when he steals a suitcase in the terminal which contains thousands of dollars.

Arthur Daley agrees to exchange the dollars for pounds with a small commission for himself.

Terry ends up minding Scotch Harry in his pokey flat. However the gang who lost the money are after Harry as well as the police.

Peter Childs makes his first appearance as DS Rycott. He would alternate with Chisholm in hounding both Arthur and Terry. Surprisingly Rycott is introduced as a copper who might be slightly bent.

The series really shows the grimy underbelly of small time crooks of late 70s London. Scotch Harry's flat looks like a squat.

The gangsters were shown to be people who could get nasty but Arthur has a comic pushing and shoving with the head honcho as Terry fights the chief henchman.

It also has another twist ending, almost if the moral is crime does not pay.
