All about football init !

From the opening scenes we are under no illusions that this episode is going to involve football. Shots of Terry kicking a ball with kids near the lock up ,talking about it ,reading about it and then loads of images of Terry at Chelsea FC amongst the crowd in what are in my opinion some of the best shots of a football match I have ever seen in a TV drama. They obviously filmed the scenes during the actual match and allowed the extras and the actor to actually watch the game whilst keeping the camera running to increase the real feel. It really adds to a very good episode involving a Flash playboy footballer and Arthur's attempts to secure a Fleet Street ' scoop ' with the local drunken sportswriter , for a fee obviously. Terry does the minding and bats off the footballers pursuers as best he can and there is a wonderfully warm scene near the end that really highlights the respect Terry has amongst his peers. A good episode and again one that highlights the fact that this series was really getting into its groove and heading for the top at this point.

In a league of its own.

Minder did a few football themed episodes but 'All About Scoring Innit?' was without doubt by far the best. Wayward soccer superstar Danny Varrow's appetite for birds, bookies and booze has left him in debt to some very nasty people and he badly needs to sell a scoop to raise the readies. Arthur gets wind of this and naively sees an opportunity of a nice little earner by acting as middle-man, but hasn't reckoned on all the hassle and egos (and not to mention expenses) involved.

There are so many ingredients which go into making this episode a classic, from the real matchday scenes at Stamford Bridge which are brilliantly filmed & edited, to the effortlessly good chemistry between Karl Howman and Dennis Waterman, and some great comedy moments from George Cole; it's clear that everyone was having a blast making this one and it shows.

As with all the very best Minder episodes, 'All About Scoring lnnit?' has a timeless quality, and never fails to entertain the viewer no matter how many times you watch it. A perfect score from me.

All About Scoring, Innit?

Celebrity footballer Danny Varrow (Karl Howman) has done a disappearing act. He has a story for sports journalist Ronnie Raikes who is drunk at the Winchester Club and is being escorted off the premises.

It gives Arthur an opportunity to become Danny's agent and sell his story with a 10% cut.

Trouble is Danny is being pursued for his gambling debts and philandering ways. A bookmaker has sent the heavies in to find him, Danny is holed up in an expensive penthouse with Terry while Arthur is footing the bill.

A thin story with a twist on the fight between Terry and one of the goons. There is a lot of fun interplay between Terry and Arthur. For example when Terry is disturbed at the football match with bad news.

It was the days when Saturday afternoon was no time to be out and about if a football match was on. Chelsea particularly were not known for some of their classier fans.
