This McCloud episode could have been a film, it has an excellent roster of guest stars and a number of different plot elements that are intertwined in a very tight script. Not to mention some great turns by the regulars.
One element is the rescue and apprehension of potential mob witness Gig Young and the mob's efforts to silence him. Normally 1 Police Plaza is as safe a building as you can get. But that leads me to a second element a police strike and we have some great scenes involving union leader Carl Weathers urging on a strike. And strike they do at midnight leaving a skeleton staff of supervisors at 1 P.P. in a blizzard.
For some comic relief there's hooker Bernadette Peters who likes to drug her clients and paint them blue. One of her clients turns out to be William Daniels an efficiency expert from Washington, DC monitoring how the NYPD is spending the federal aid that is being given during New York City's fiscal crisis.
This McCloud story is structured in the fashion of films like Boogie Nights, Crash, and Magnolia. And it's every bit as good as any of those films.
The finale is a well choreographed Sam Peckinpah like shootout involving series regulars, Dennis Weaver, J.D. Cannon, and Terry Carter and others against a squad of mob hit men.
