Political dissident Dr.Maza ( Hugh Burden ) lives in self-imposed exile in Sweden with daughter Chantal ( Sonia Fox ). He has written a damning expose of his country's history, revealing amongst other things how the ambitious Colonel Haider ( Ferdy Mayne ) murdered the President.
Haider, who dreams of becoming President himself, desperately wants to stop the book's publication. Sensing that he is under surveillance, Maza calls on McGill. The ex-agent is hired to escort Chantal to England. En route to the airport, his car is forced off the road by Haider's men. When Mac comes to, Chantal is no longer with him. He returns to Maza's house, the police in tow, but the doctor denies all knowledge of him. Even Chantal does not rush to his defence. Mac spots the barrel of a gun protruding from behind a curtain...
Written by Jan Read and Peter Duffell ( from a story by Kevin B.Laffan, author of 'Essay In Evil' ), this is another of the show's forays into the murky world of political intrigue. Mac is once again caught between opposing factions, and has to use his ingenuity to stay alive. There's a happy ending for once; posing as an ambulance driver, he switches the captured doctor for his arch-enemy, and, grinning like a Cheshire cat, looks forward to a date with the stunning Toni Olsson ( Marga Roche ). For all its good points, however, the story is a little bit on the dull side.
As 'Dr.Maza', the late Hugh Burden gives his usual fine performance, although some might be put off by the spectacle of an English actor portraying a member of an ethnic group. Sonia Fox later appeared as George Cole's wife in the 'U.F.O'. story 'Flight Plan' ), before ending her acting career ( as so many people did ) in 'Crossroads'. Ferdy Mayne was, like Anton Diffring, perpetually cast as Germans in war films such as 'Where Eagles Dare', but here he's a different nationality entirely. Bruce Boa is 'Inspector Bergson', a world away from loud-mouthed 'Mr.Johnson' in the classic 'Fawlty Towers' episode 'Waldorf Salad'. Marga Roche strangely has only one other acting credit to her name, that of Bulldog Drummond's Swedish masseuse 'Birgit' in the 1969 spy spoof 'Some Girls Do'. She is simply gorgeous, and one envies Mac at the end for getting off with her.
