THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. – The Abominable Snowman Affair – 1966
This is the 72nd episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) UNCLE's main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.
This one really needs to be seen to be believed! This one is shoddy from the get-go. The terrible story goes hand in hand with the poor direction, continuity problems and numerous other missteps.
This one is set in the small nation of Ghupat. The country is high up in the Himalayas. The aged High Lama of Ghupat, Philip Ahn, is being forced by the First Minister, David Sheiner, to pick the next in line. Sheiner wants Ahn to pick Sheiner's son to become the new Lama. Ahn refuses and kills himself after sending a message (by carrier pigeon) to his old friend, UNCLE boss, Leo G Carroll.
Carroll sends UNCLE agent David McCallum to look into the matter. McCallum arrives and for some reason changes into an Abominable Snowman costume. (this is never explained) Then Anne Jeffreys steps out from some rocks and shoots McCallum, wounding him. Jefferys is an old Hollywood Western star who lives in Ghupat. She goes by the name of Calamity Rogers.
Anyways, Jefferys has her gun-bearer cart McCallum back to her mountain top house. When McCallum fails to report in, Vaughn is sent from New York to find out why. Now we have Sheiner consulting Pilar Seurat, the holy seer of the country. Seurat can read minds and tell the future etc.
The story just gets sillier as it goes along, with holy elephants and a selection of man eating tigers thrown in. The whole mish-mash finally ends with the UNCLE types restoring the proper line of the Lama.
This is not a winner, this mess is the longest 50 minutes I've sat through in years! This is the first work by writer, Krishna Shah. It should have been his last. The poor cast does the best they can, but are defeated by the writing etc.
