Lucy Carmichael Dates the Other Laugh-In Guy
kgraovac15 November 2023
Lucy and new roommate Carol Bradford attend the Palm Springs Golf Classic where the latter is performing with a band, and the former ends up snagging a date with a handsome golf pro.

Carol's Tarzan yell opens the episode, and while not officially a two-parter, this one continues some of the themes introduced in the previous entry. I guess Carol's rendition of "Hard-Hearted Hannah" impressed those "kooky" musicians The Vagabonds last week because now she's their vocalist. She also seems to have cut her waist-length locks in the interim.

Burnett is kind of wasted here as the story would have worked with Viv or Mary Jane playing Carol's role with little difference. The musical number at the end isn't as good as in last week's episode. The best part is when Lucy calls Mr. Mooney "Teddy".

Lucy's swimsuit is the most revealing thing she'd wear on this series and later for the musical number she is seen in a very simple but classy pink dress. She also mentions that she knows how to play "Glow Worm" on the saxophone and is shown as being an off-key singer both which date back to the I LOVE LUCY era.

While Dick Martin of LAUGH-IN played Lucy Carmichael's neighbor and frequent escort back in Season One, here Martin's partner Dan Rowan plays the handsome golf pro she is paired with. BTW, the names on the billboard for the tournament are all names of the crew and production team, including Gary Morton. I am surprised he didn't have a cameo in this one.

Should have been better than it is, but it's a very colorful episode as the sets and costumes are bursting with that vibrant mid-Sixties color.
