No Morphine!
ExplorerDS678927 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Previously on Little House, Albert got in trouble with the police. Charles brought him back to Walnut Grove on a short trip to help him recuperate. Albert stole morphine from Doc Baker and has been taking it behind everybody's back; As we begin, Doc Baker had given morphine to one of his elderly patients and had just begun trying to fit Jason Carter with a pair of eyeglasses he wanted so badly, when suddenly the doctor is called away. It seems the morphine didn't work on old Zeb Colie, and it in turn made him sicker. See, Zeb is diabetic and the worst thing you can give someone in that state is sugar, which is what the morphine was revealed to be. So, Doc Baker set out to discover who did the switcheroo on his medicine. He was quick to blame Nels because the manufacturer was too reliable and by all means perfect, I guess. But when Nels mentioned Albert carrying the medicine out for delivery, Doc Baker heads to the mill to talk with Charles. The Ingalls patriarch instantly denied the accusations. Albert could never do anything like that. He could burn down a blind school and lie and cheat and talk back, but he'd never do morphine. But a thorough search of Albert's room proved him wrong as the medicine was found hidden in one of his shoes.

Charles confronted his son on the matter and made him promise to stop, and he agreed. So, we'll just have to wait and see; at school, Jason's new glasses did wonders for his education, even though he didn't really need them, he just wanted to look smart, as for Albert, the withdrawls were already setting in. At one point, he simply lost it and beat up poor Jeb Carter, and when Miss Plum tried to break them up, Albert slapped her and took off. Seems it wasn't as over as Charles wanted it to be (according to Doc Baker). Charles and Edwards look for the wayward lad but could not find him, however Doc Baker had a plan: that night when Albert went back to steal more morphine, Charles and Baker intervened. In order to keep a tighter watch on the boy, Edwards let them use his house while he was away, voluntarily. And so began a night in Hell- Albert woke up screaming, saying he couldn't breath, and when taken out for air, the little bugger took off again. Charles thankfully caught him and carried him back. By morning, Albert had finally gotten to sleep, but he woke up screaming again and this time it accompanied by convulsions, involuntary body movement and vomiting, and through it all, Charles never left his side. After many hours of enduring such torture, it was all over. Albert recovered and was soon as good as new, and it was time he and Charles headed back to the city, but first Albert made amends at the school and warned the children on the dangers of drug use, and as for Jason, he kicked his glasses after the new girl called him a "four eyes."

Fantastically acted episode, and at times difficult to watch. Matthew Laborteaux and Michael Landon were simply excellent at portraying all the pain and emotion their characters endured. I'm surprised Little House didn't win more Emmys for the acting. I mean, if they'd stop giving all the Emmys to M*A*S*H every year, they might have focused some attention on this show. So anyway, what became of Albert? We next see him in Season 10's "A Look Back to Yesterday" where he presumably dies from leukemia, it's not stated that he did, but he isn't in the other two finale movies so more than likely Albert died, and my guess is that Laura wrote him the "happy ending" mentioned in her closing narration. Anyhow, check this one out and brace yourself for wonderful, realistic acting!

LANDON could be Ballsy!!!!
zorob1-12 November 2012
I must say this episode still has the same power it had in 1983... I am mostly going to comment about when Landon did the Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson... Landon was a very popular guest who guested at my count 24 times over the years before he passed.. It is hard to get an accurate count I am recalling from memory.. He came on did his charming funny schtick before he got deadly serious... He was furious at the NBC censors for not showing any clips from this episode which was graphic in great detail.... He blasted the network for showing no guts for fear of offending viewers.. Funny thing was Lil House came on Monday Night at 8 p.m. which was family hour on prime time and broadcast with no problem... Carson in all his (true) class said on air he respected Landon's pov and had every right to feel the way he did.. The power these two men had at the time w/NBC they were their two real money makers for the network still couldn't get aired showed they were both slowly losing clout. Landon got on his soap box about pot smoking and how it leads to stronger drugs which is true... This is where Landon could be such a hypocrite.. During his Bonanza days by his own admission he was addicted to uppers and downers drank too much and was a 4 pack a day smoker of unfiltered cigarettes could judge others without looking at himself first... During Little House Melissa Gilbert said Landon drank a bottle of vodka a day on set to get through production...

drug free always the best way to go
RedRainbowUnicorn2315 January 2015
This is the second part of this outstanding 2 parter out of season 9 in this episode we see the negative effects of drug abuse and the tempers that goes with it it drags you completely out of your character. Doc baker finds out that the morphine that was in his shipment is not morphine but pure white Castor sugar doc Baker confronts Nels Olsen about it asking him if he or someone else might have tampered with the shipment Nels denies it and says it never left his sight and that the only time it did was when he gave it to Albert to go and give it to him. That immediately rise suspicion to Doc Baker. Find out what happens after wards by watching this stunning episode. Good job Micheal!!!!!!!

Excellent

The part one leads to this part where you can really see the effects of drugs and how it controlled Albert with his everyday tasks. He did an awesome job acting as a druggie and this episode was one that i would love to watch again. Even though during times in the movie, i would think "Oh my gosh!" and see how Albert reacted without his stolen morphine. It was nothing like other innocent "little house" episodes that i have seen. I felt bad for Albert because i thought, "wow his throat must hurt after filming because of all that screaming he did in that episode. It was a very good episode overall and i hope that others will read my comment and decide to watch the episode because it is really about what some people today are going through.

Albert :what has become of him?

Warning: Spoilers
This is another episode where Matthew Laborteaux shines:the other one was his fight with morphine, which was depicted in a very realistic way .Once again ,he comes back with Pa Ingalls but this time it seems for the last time:his nose is constantly bleeding and he has been diagnosed as suffering from a serious illness (probably leukemia).Terminally-ill,he has to renege on his studies (he wants to become a doctor and to work in Walnut Grove) One of the most distressing episodes of the long series, the ending has puzzled most of the users ,for Albert's death is not shown ,and the final scene can be seen as some kind of friendship miracle.Besides,in the morphine segment ,Laura's voice over alludes to "Doctor Ingalls arriving in WG".Albert's fate will remain the biggest mystery of "little house" .

VERY graphic

Warning: Spoilers
Little House On The Prarie is one of the those shows that really hasn't aged very well. The episodes seem kind of corny and dated today but this one was very different. It had to be one of the darkest "Little House" episodes ever. After the Ingalls left Walnut Grove and moved to the big city, young Albert seems to have fallen in with the wrong crowd being repeatedly arrested and facing a term in the work house. Charles brings him back to Walnut Grove in a desperate effort to straigthen him out and it turns out his problems are worse then anyone could have imagined because he is addicted to morphine. Michael Landon did a wonderful job writing, directing and acting in this episode. On every other episode Charles is the father who always knows what to do and you never see him sweat. However, he is old and worn down here and there is one scene where he breaks down and tells his friend Isaah that he just doesn't know what to do and sometimes wishes Albert would just go away and never come back. I have to admit Albert was never my favorite character on the show. Whether he meant to or not you might recall he was the one who burned down the school for the blind and killed Mary's baby and Jonathan Garvey's wife who was trying to save it. He is definitely not sympathetic here and frankly you almost wish he was in jail. After all he steals morphine resulting in a frail old man suffering and he goes beserk and slaps his teacher. Matthew Laborteaux defintely shows acting talent beyond his years as he plays Albert going through the hell of withdrawal complete with vomiting and screaming. You almost expect to see his head rotate!

Michael Landon at his best !!
sarahmaesewell6 May 2023
Wow!! What an episode. This is little house in its purest state.

Having Michael and Matthew back in the show is such a treat, and really picks season 9 up out of some murky water. Utilizing the beloved doc baker as a main character in an episode is always a good idea.

Matthew laborteaux gives career defining performance as Albert. He put everything into this episode Once you see the throw-up scene, you will never forget it !!

Charles's dye-job is sub par. And the lack of Caroline leaves a bit to be desired in the episode, but overall phenomenal. It felt like a classic little house episode. What is not to love ?? !!

Saving Albert
mitchrmp29 November 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I cannot even imagine how hard it would be to give up a drug addiction. There are some mistakes that kids make that just aren't easy to correct. Charles had no idea how bad things would get, but after Albert punches out Jason Cooper and hits the teacher, he knows that Albert wasn't fit to be around other people while he was going through withdrawal.

Watching Albert is awful! Michael Landon had a passion to speak against drug addiction, and this episode really shows it. He didn't make the withdrawal scenes pretty. This is enough to scare a lot of people! Albert makes a nice speech against drug addiction at the end of this episode.

Considering the subject matter of this episode, it's amazing to see that the Olsson girls stayed out of this mess.

By the way, at the end of this episode, Laura announces that Albert returns as Dr. Albert Ingalls years later. This is incorrect since in one of the TV movies that come later, Albert dies from cancer.

Compromised by one scene
gcanfield-297271 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
My rating would be 10, if not for the very graphic withdrawal scene. Albert vomits, again and again. Close-ups are included. Michael Landon directed this episode, and he went out of his way to make this scene as unpleasant as possible. Why? The episode is otherwise excellent. The anti-drug message is taken. Nobody needs to feel someone else's pain. The show ended shortly after this episode. I wonder why.

Crackhead Albert
LaverneandShirleysucks12 October 2021
This episode originally aired during the Crack epidemic of the early 80's that I have always equated this episode with that ever since. It was like Little House jumps into the 1980's---this episode was so bizarre and surreal to watch...like a Little House Afterschool Special. Even now almost 40 years later it still makes me cringe while viewing it.

I admit to a strong dislike to the character of Albert. Since the Ingalls picked the dirty urchin off the streets of Winoka I could never accept him. And when he killed Mary's baby I despised him forever.

The only good thing I can say about Albert is that he thankfully dies by the end of the series. I know Laura says he became a doctor later on, but I choose to ignore that tacked on voice over and relish the thought he eventually died of a crack overdose and is reunited with Sylvia in hell.
