THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF Wyatt Earp – "Mr. Earp Meets A Lady" – 1955 This is episode two of the 1955 to 1961 western series, THE LIFE AND LEGEND OF WYAT Earp. Earp, is played by, Hugh O'Brian.
O'Brian is the new Marshal of Ellsworth Kansas. He decides that a way to cut down on gun-play, is to have no one carry a gun inside town limits. A few cowboys are not impressed with the idea, but soon have this idea knocked out of their heads.
Denver Pyle, one of the two men O'Brian is looking for about the murder of the last lawman, rides into town. Pyle ties up at the local drinking hole and has a drink. O'Brian hears this and pays the man a visit. O'Brian disarms Pyle and takes him into custody.
Pyle is not the least bit concerned with this as he is brought before the Judge. This quickly changes when he sees that the Judge is now Richard Travis, and not the crooked Marshall Bradford. (see episode one) Bradford had been in Pyle's pocket. Travis has Pyle bound over for trial.
O'Brian hopes that having Pyle in jail will flush out his crazy brother, Hal Baylor. O'Brian brings in a few more guns to keep guard on Pyle.
Mason Alan Dinehart (Bat Masterson) has taken a fancy to a girl he just met. Dinehart is all smiles as he introduces Talbot to O'Brian. Miss Talbot is likewise all smiles.
The next day, Pyle's brother, Baylor comes riding up to the jail house with a dozen or so gunmen. He calls on O'Brian to cut Pyle loose. This of course is not going to happen and a brisk firefight ensues. Baylor's bunch gets the short end of the fight with Baylor being captured and tossed into the same cell as Pyle.
O'Brian sends the extra deputies home except for Kem Didds and the newly hired, Dinehart. They are to watch the prisoners during the night shift. They are halfway into their shift when there is a knock at the jail door. It is Talbot. Could she have a word with Dinehart. Once inside the jail house, Talbot pulls a pocket gun on the two deputies. She then releases Pyle and Baylor who quickly arm up.
Baylor wants to pay O'Brian a visit at his sleeping quarters. He has killing on his mind. The attempt goes wrong forcing the two villains to hurry out of town. Talbot, gets left behind and is soon gobbled up by the law. It seems that Talbot is Pyle's "lady friend." O'Brian laughs, then, tells Talbot that Pyle has a good half dozen "friends" in the area.
Talbot feels the right fool and tells O'Brian everything she knows about the escaped brothers. O'Brian has a word with Judge Travis and Talbot is set free.
This was the second of a, three episode story dealing with Pyle and Baylor.
The director here was longtime television and b-western helmsman, Frank MacDonald. He worked on such low renters as, TREACHERY RIDES THE RANGE, MY PAL TRIGGER, RANCHO GRANDE, RIDE TENDERFOOT RIDE, MAN FROM OKLAHOMA, UNDER NEVADA SKIES, GUN SMUGGLERS and APACHE CHIEF.
Gloria Talbot is best known as the bride in, I MARRIED A MONSTER FROM OUTER SPACE. She also had a nice bit in 1955's WE'RE NO ANGELS. (B/W)
