Good Story
pmike-113123 May 2022
A good episode of a teen buying his first car - something we all go through. Ward helps out to make sure Wally's purchase is a sound and safe one.

Just a shame we have to endure another "stupid" comment from a mmazar-01634. She really lacks insight and vocabulary....

Hey, it's a car. It runs, and it's Wally's!
pensman29 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Wally is looking for a car but Eddie is looking with him. There is one other problem, Wally needs his dad's approval. Wally is making a list of pros and cons as to why he needs a car, so far, he has the pros. It's dinner time and Wally is hoping to bring up the topic of his buying a car; he finally gets his in and gets a surprise. Ward says Wally can buy a car but there are conditions: Ward gets car approval, and Wally finds out how much insurance will cost. Turns out the car insurance is almost as expensive as the $220 car Wally has an eye on.

Time for bed. Ward checks in with Wally and finds out he did a quote. Ward is willing to help Wally out, but he has to keep grades up and Ward still gets some say. First stop, the bomb that Wally has held for a $5 deposit. Ward looks at Franks $220 bomb and checks the wheel for play, the springs which are in bad shape; and the car has a problem when getting started, it burns oil and the engine overheats. No bomb for Wally. Frank gives Wally back his $5 deposit. Frank feels he will have better luck selling to a kid whose father is out of town.

Used car lot time. The first salesman gives Ward the bum's rush. A quick good-bye and explanation to Wally as why. After checking out a number of cars and lots, Ward finds a car that isn't a beauty by any standard, but it appears safe. Mr. Nelson, the dealer, seems fair: Ward can take it to his mechanic for a once over, and after a week Wally can exchange it with any other car on the lot. Wally has a car. Hey, it's also a convertible. Ward's mechanic gives it an OK for safety, if not looks.

That night Wally takes mom and dad out for dinner in his new car. It does need seat covers, a paint job, new springs in the seats, a working radio, and a door that doesn't stick, but Wally's proud of it. As the Cleavers pull away, the neighbors shake their heads. Poor Ward, they thought he was doing well at his company.

Back safely at home, Beaver comments that the restaurant must have been full, otherwise why did they put Wally's car in the alley out of site. Wally acknowledges to Ward that the car has some problems, but he's really grateful that his dad helped him buy the best car he could for $185. Ward is really pleased that Wally thanked him for his help.

I think every boy can remember his first car and the episodes brings back memories of both being the son and then the dad. It also reminds me of a few cars I had. One was an old SAAB that ran. It was an eyesore. I had a friend who would ask if I was picking him up for a ride to work, that I park a few houses down from his. He would walk down so his neighbors wouldn't see him getting in.

Be Careful Young Man

Warning: Spoilers
The message of this episode is to be very careful when buying your first car - or even your 100th car.

Wally wants to buy a car. The parents don't like that idea at all. They think he's too young to buy a car. But he comes up with ideas like giving kids rides to school and charging them. Wait...what kid would be stupid enough to pay Wally to drive him to school when he can ride the school bus for free? That part is never answered (haha). Anyway, the father softens up and allows Wally to buy a car as long as he (the father) approves of the car. So they go car shopping together and end up with a car that looks like crap, but runs really good and passes all the safety inspections.

His mother thinks the car looks like crap and doesn't want to ride in it, but she tries her best to hide her displeasure. She's a good mom.

This episode is very similar to an episode of the Brady Bunch where the oldest boy Greg buys his first car. But this episode came first, of course. The two episodes would make a great "double feature".

Just a little side story, when I bought my first car the salesman played a dirty trick on me and I fell for it. I didn't have a father at that point and was on my own against the big bad world of car salesmen and I got suckered. I guess fathers really do help sometimes, especially when buying your first car!

This is a fun episode. America's family, the Cleavers, and America's love affair, cars. It's a good mix.

WALLYS IN LOVE WITH A 53 CHEVY?

Remembering your first car really CONNECTS with this episode. Hugh Beaumont often contributed ideas to the series, and from his own personal experiences, no doubt thinking about his real life sons. He plays a super dad in this story.

Wally has saved $180 dollars for his very first car. Now its time to shop around and see what's out there... There's the catch. It gets complicated, not to mention the price of insurance, upkeep, etc, etc, as duly noted by Mr. Cleaver. And just like a real dad would tell y'all.

This is a fun story, and actually poignant at times, because it's a big responsibility for a teenager, especially if they're on a way limited budget. In today's money market, Wally's $180 would equal about $1700, and that's pretty commendable for him to save up so much money. And I'll bet this story inspired a lot of kids.

Look for popular character actor Ed Peck as the car salesman. Peck was everywhere on tv, both sitcoms and cop shows. He appeared many times on THAT GIRL and in the 80s played Officer Kirk on HAPPY DAYS.

This one may have inspired Greg's first car episode on the BRADY BUNCH, about 9 years later. Another tv classic. Greg bought a 55 Chevy, though this one was kind of sharp when it got fixed up.

Don't miss, and you've got to see the Cleavers all taking a ride in Wally's jalopy.

From SEASON 6 remastered dvd box set.

Has almost a semi-documentary feel to it...
AlsExGal6 April 2024
... and I guess that makes it strange I would rate it so highly. But this really isn't a typical Leave It To Beaver with one of the kids getting into a fix and learning a life lesson from it.

Instead, it's Wally learning that the price of a car doesn't end with buying the car, and that maintenance, insurance, and registration are costly recurring issues. As he sits in his room lamenting the expense of things, Ward comes in and says he'll help with all of these auxiliary costs under a few conditions - Wally keeping his grades up and driving responsibly and Ward has to approve of the car purchased.

So where is where the writers could make a choice - They can either have Ward insisting on some car that a grandma would drive, putting Wally in a bind and having to either be ungrateful to his dad or be embarrassed to his peers, or they can write what they did - Show an experienced dad making sure that his son looks for the right things when buying a car.

The end was cute with the Cleavers going to dinner in Wally's diamond in the rough used car with the neighbors saying that Mr. Cleaver must not be doing so well at his firm.

There really is no need for a spoiler warning on this one because it is not your typical story driven episode.

Wally still very naive
vitoscotti25 August 2021
Very entertaining episode. Wally learning the ropes. Who'd buy a convertible for a young driver with safety concerns?

Beaver like a puppy dog waiting at the window. Shyster salesmen are always good sitcom characters. Wally unaware of Ward's car knowledge?

A Car For Wally
StrictlyConfidential20 January 2021
(*Wally to Beaver quote*) - "I'm figuring out the pros and cons of buying a car."

Out of the 39 episodes from the 6th season of "Leave It to Beaver", I'd say that this was certainly one of the better ones.

With only $180 to spend, Wally doesn't really have much to choose from.

To help Wally make a sound decision, Ward goes along with him when he goes looking for a car.

Stupid Neighbor Woman
mmazar-0163423 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The woman neighbor of the Cleavers that stated after Wally drove off in his car with his parents and brother that she thought that Mr. Cleaver was making enough money at his place of employment was a stupid woman. She was implying that anybody making a lot of money should not purchase used car.
