Memorable!
mm-3915 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Another after school memory. Watching The Broken Window reminds me that we all had or have a friend like Eddie Haskel. The boy's were told not to play baseball around the car, and Beve never hits the ball, and bingo broken window. Well the two protagonist ask Eddie for help. Eddie says roll the window down and when dad rolls the window up say gee dad how did that happen? Well my uncle and dad almost peed themselves laughing at Eddie. Of course the boys almost got away, but guilt had the boys do the right thing. Plus I don't think Mr Clever would of gave them a hard womping! Well directed and written 8 stars.

Worse than a broken window is a broken trust
pensman30 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The boys are playing what looks like softball in the street in front of the Cleavers when Eddie sends a lucky hit through a window. Everyone takes off except for Wally and Beaver; it is their house after all. Ward isn't upset but no more ball playing close to the house. Ward recalls "in his day" he would have had to pay for the window plus get a strapping. June suggests how Ward's father would make him sell matches in the snow on Christmas Eve. That sounds cool to the boys. Then June is in trouble for driving the car with the emergency brakes on. A good distraction for Wally and the Beaver.

The next day, Ward and June are out looking at vacant lots as they are considering building. The boys are back at home and are on the way to Metzger's Field when Wally tosses a ball to Beaver. This time Beaver hits the ball, right into the passenger window of the car. When June calls they have an opportunity to tell the truth about the broken car window, but pass. Maybe Eddie Haskell will have an answer. He does: roll down the window and don't say anything; just act surprised when the window is rolled up. Wally doesn't feel comfortable with that. Maybe they can earn money somehow and get it fixed before their parents get home.

After "knifing" the piggy bank they have $1.85. They return bottles for 65 cents. They sell some stuff at the junkyard and they have a grand total of $6.35 which is about $10.00 short. The boys know Ward won't hit them, but they know their father will "look" at them which is worse.

They roll down the car window in the hope they can buy some time before they tell Ward what they did. At dinner they get worse news, Ward is planning on driving the family out for a picnic tomorrow. The boys balk, Ward knows something is up, but after looking at lots all day he's too tired to pursue it.

In the car the next day, Ward asks the boys to roll up the window. Beaver tries every excuse he can not to roll up the window but eventually he has to give in to the inevitable. But before he does, he confesses to breaking the window. As the window goes up, it isn't broken. Earlier, Ward had been in the garage and he slammed the car door, so he thought he broken the window; he took the car in early to have the repair done. Would the boys have confessed if they had seen the fixed window before they got into the car. Beaver says they would have, someday; someday after they had done something good and everyone was in a good mood. Everybody in the car has a good laugh.

The following day they are heading out to play ball. Eddie wants to know what happened about the window. Wally admits they told their father and he's taking the cost to repair the window out of their allowances. Eddie can't believe they told, and all that happened is they have to pay for the damage. His old man would have given him one in the puss; Wally and the Beaver have a really goofy father. Both Wally and Beaver warn Eddie to shut up about their father of Eddie will get one in the puss and it won't be from his father.

I can agree with Wally and the Beaver about the "look." Many the time I did something wrong, usually just stupid or foolish, and my dad would just say he was disappointed in me. I would have preferred a good old whipping. A whipping stung for maybe a minute but those words—I'm disappointed—stung for a lot longer.

For those of you way way too young, "knifing" a pig was to use the thin end of a butter knife to slide coins out of a piggy bank or any bank with a large slotted coin drop.

Great cast carried a thin script

Warning: Spoilers
The show is a vehicle for the iconic sitcom characters to do their thing. Scripts are full of logic holes. But, it's all good. Still terrific viewing. Even good kids break things. Ward knows his kids aren't perfect.

THE BROKEN WINDOW SCANDAL!
tcchelsey2 March 2024
Love this story, so true to life.

The only episode directed by James Neilson, famous for directing many classic episodes for ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS. He also directed the funny nun movie, WHERE ANGELS GO TROUBLE FOLLOWS, always on tv.

Another simple plot. Ward and June tell Beave and Wally NOT to play baseball around the house -- and the car window gets broken in one EZ lesson. Don't worry, Eddie has a plan. Just roll down the window?

Who will know? Until they go for a little ride...

I think everybody, at one time or another, had a pal like Eddie with some outrageous ideas. The BIG question... would Eddie have taken his own advice had it happened to him?

Look for popular comedian and bad guy Ralph Sanford as Fats Flannaghan. Sanford appeared in movies and tv frequently, but passed suddenly a few years after this episode due to heart problems. Yes, this story was redone (as were many) on THE BRADY BUNCH where Peter is warned not to play ball in the house and CRASH. You know the rest.

An early Eddie Haskell classic and he has some of the best lines. SEASON 1 EPISODE 25 remastered. 6 dvd set. Released 2014. Check out the great cover.

Ward sternly lectures his sons about the hazards of playing ball too close to the house.

The boys play baseball again in front of the house and end up breaking the window of the family car. They try to keep it from their parents, but, inevitably, the truth comes out.

Wally and Beaver look for advice from an odd source
AlsExGal8 May 2024
Wally and Beaver break a window one day when playing ball too close to the house. In fact it's one of the other boys who breaks the window, but they all scatter after the window breaks and leave Wally and Beaver holding the bag. Ward gets the window fixed, but lectures them about how close they were playing, and they promise to not play that close again.

But then the next day they are going to play ball elsewhere when Beaver asks Wally to pitch just one ball to him while they are close to the garage, and they hear the sound of breaking glass - It's the passenger window of the family car. Ward and June are out house hunting, so the boys have some time. Then Wally does a weird thing - He calls Eddie Haskell for advice! Eddie's advice is to roll down the car window and then plead ignorance when the window is inevitably raised. That is what the boys decide to do when they can't raise the money to fix the window before their parents get home. How will this work out? Watch and find out.

This was early in Eddie Haskell's tenure, and even the following year Wally would never listen to advice from Eddie. Beaver would until he got a little older because Eddie offered such tempting shortcuts to problems.
