A Beaver can never really be a Theodore
pensman5 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Aunt Martha wants to pay to send Theodore to Fallbrook, all the Bronson boys go there. June tells Beaver this is a big deal, it could change his entire life. Will Beaver dump his friends and Mayfield for Fallbrook prep? June is ready to pack his suitcases. After looking at the catalog, Beaver is ready to go because they have horseback riding, archery, swimming, and on and on. Maybe he can put up with having to wear a jacket and tie every day. Of course, Beaver has to fly there. Aunt Martha calls, and Beaver thanks her for the opportunity, wait until the guys hear.

At school Terry and Whitey tell Beaver he is already accepted on the high school baseball team and will be playing third base. But hey, Beaver will no doubt enjoy being at Fallbrook. Beaver will get his own room and furniture, it will be great. Good luck. Mrs. Rayburn is checking to see how many of Beaver's classmates are going to Mayfield. Everyone except Beaver. It is so great the class will be moving forward together and have four more years together in friendship. Then Donna and Patty want to know why Beaver didn't raise his hand? There were going to try and be in his homeroom because he's such a cute guy. Well, we will miss you Beaver. Wait a second, Fallbrook isn't looking as great.

June is having second thoughts about Beaver being so far away. It's silly to be sentimental, as long as Beaver is happy. Beaver is walking home. There is the tree with his initials. There is Archie the dog waiting for Beaver to pass by to get his daily pat. The old firehouse where he used to talk with Gus. When Beaver gets home both of his parents sense something is off. Wally is rearranging the room to suit his needs. He's already putting Beaver's bed in the basement. Why should he be crowded in when Beaver won't be there. They can put a cot in when Beaver gets home for five or so days for Christmas.

Beaver doesn't want to go. Wally says the only thing to do is talk to dad. Den time. I don't want to go because I'll miss my friends. Beaver has put everyone on the spot. Aunt Martha is flying in and if you don't want to go you have to tell Aunt Martha. Time for Beaver to man up.

Wally and Beaver are upstairs getting dressed, and Beaver is still in high dudgeon sulk. Wally looks great but probably too big to be hugged. Wallace goes look great, like his cousin Wilbur who married the French girl. But Theodore isn't too big to be hugged. Aunt Martha is excited but Theodore needs to talk with her. Theodore tells her he has changed his mind; all his friends will be at Mayfield. But Aunt Martha is unusually accepting and just wants Beaver to go where he will be happy. Better he go with his choice than just try to please a sentimental old Aunt. Did Beaver luck out. What a wonderful Aunt.

Ward want to know what cousin Wilbur did. June looks at him; a Bronson married a French girl, that's enough. Upstairs Beaver is dithering again. Too late. Well, the opportunity was there. When we see the Disney series Still the Beaver, we have to wonder if going to Fallbrook really would have been life changer. The series would have had a different title.

I suspect Beaver would have had a terrible time at Fallbrook. Having taught in a private school, I know what some of the kids would have done to such a gullible mark as Beaver. His life would have been hell. We "know" what he was like as an adult, not too far distant from being the Beaver.

Touching scenes and a continuity error
jrobinson4520 May 2016
While I basically agree with the previous reviewer, to me the scenes of Beaver walking around his changed and bygone childhood haunts were worth the price of admission. The faded pictures of old Mayfield sports teams, the initials carved in the tree, the old dog who barely recognized him and especially the shuttered fire station (and no more Gus). You really get a sense that things are changing--and ending.

The error comes in the scene where Beaver walks into his room and Wally is changing around all the furniture. Oblivious so far to Beaver's change of heart, Wally goes on at some length about how much extra room he will have when Beaver is gone and how he's going to put Beaver's bed and belongings in the basement. A cot can be set up when Beaver returns home on school breaks.

None of this makes any sense because it has already been well established that Wally is leaving home soon as well for college. He won't be living in that room on a regular basis either. So,what difference does rearranging the bedroom make?

BEAVER SHOULD HAVE GONE TO NORTH HOLLYWOOD HIGH.
tcchelsey5 November 2023
The biggest mistake all the writers made concerned WHERE the Cleavers lived. It got confusing. In fact, Mrs. Cleaver says her Aunt Martha is flying in from the east coast, yet early episodes had her living nearby? There was also some references to the Cleavers living in Ohio?

I always said, writers should have just implied they lived in North Hollywood, where the series was filmed at Universal Studios. Lets not forget that there are some scenes filmed on location --and you see can see palm trees in the background!

Better yet, they should have lived at the beach, like GIDGET. That would have been a deal maker for all of us kids back in the day. Could you imagine Wally and Beave surfing USA?

Whatever the case, the story goes that June's kindly Aunt Martha (played by Madge Kennedy) would love to have Beaver go to a distinguished prep school of her choice. Of course, of course.... Beave is not to keen on that idea.

Dick Conway wrote this and more than likely from personal experience. Going to a new school is a tough experience for any kid. Well directed by High Beaumont, who always got some fine performances from everybody, especially down and out Jerry Mathers. He is in another mess.

Applause to Madge Kennedy, who returns after many seasons to the Cleaver household. A lot has changed. Madge was actually a silent screen actress who acted with WC Fields. Best remembered for her appearances on Alfred Hitchcock's tv show.

Everyone's favorite teacher and principal Doris Packer returns as Mrs. Rayburn, always so much fun to watch, and an important member of the series. At the time she was also appearing on DOBIE GILLIS.

Yes, there is a goof! When Mrs. Rayburn asks if everyone in class is returning to school, everyone but Beave raises their hands. Mrs. Rayburn says its unanimous?

Stay tuned to find out what exactly happens.

Misguided Episode
MichaelMartinDeSapio20 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
There were really no bad LITB episodes - the show was of too consistently high quality for that - but there are a few which seemed fundamentally misguided in their premises. This is one of them. The idea of Ward and June sending average-kid Beaver to a fancy prep school in New England simply defies logic. And then to get irritated with Beaver when he has a very natural change of heart - especially when Ward and June, under the influence of Aunt Martha, practically forced the idea on Beaver in the first place - seems beyond the pale. The episode just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Fortunately, the writing is of the usual high quality of this series. Wally has a good quip about ivy-covered schools: "That's not mold, Beaver; that's what they call tradition." Even when an LITB episode is subpar, there's always something worthwhile to enjoy.

Beaver Broadens His Horizons
StrictlyConfidential21 January 2021
(*Beaver quote*) - Gee. I never thought a kid like me would ever take a plane to school."

Aunt Martha sends Beaver information about Fallbrook Prep School which she encourages him to attend.

At first Beaver is all excited about the possibility of attending Fallbrook, but after seriously thinking things over he has some doubts that this school is a good choice for him.

Yet another Beaver prep school rehash.
vitoscotti4 September 2021
The episode has some warmth. But, how many Beaver prep school episodes can be refried? Ward is lacking his usual common sense not discussing it as a family. Beaver can barely tie his shoes . Now he's prep school material. Wasn't Aunt Martha coming anyway? Now it's implied she's flying in from the east coast. She lived driving distance in Freeport with other writers. Whitey is tiny for his age. 3* LITB episode is still 100x better than current tv shows.

The Worst LITB
1Wishbone13 October 2022
IMO, this is the worst episode of the series. First, I have always found Aunt Martha to be the most annoying character ever to invade the Cleaver world - in every episode. Second, Ward really belittles Beaver when he says he doesn't want to go away to school. Father of the year he is not. Third, everyone says Beaver changed his mind - this isn't true. He never wanted to go away in the first place. It's like they're trying to get rid of him. Fourth, why wasn't Aunt Martha enamored with Wally like she is the Beaver? He seems to be overlooked here. Fifth, in every previous episode featuring Aunt Martha, she was always within an easy drive from Mayfield, no more than maybe two hours. In this episode for some reason, she has to fly in to visit the Cleavers. This is a glaring error. Sixth, Wally is so anxious to get rid of his brother that he rearranges the bedroom furniture, and tells the Beaver he can sleep on a cot. "You won't be home anyway", he tells him. In a previous episode Beaver lamented that nobody likes him. Based on this episode, I can understand why he feels that way.
