Slowly I Turn
kellielulu14 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Lucy wants to get into the act - again. Trying to keep pace with highly trained ballet dancers is a disaster for Lucy but hilarious for the rest of us . The scene has one of the all time classic scenes as her foot gets stuck in the bar , then her leg then she's upside down like a possum! Mary Wikes playing a strict ballet instructor has the task of trying to get Lucy unstuck!

Later she tries a comedy routine as a clown with another actor playing a clown for an act down at the club it's just as funny if not funnier than the ballet mishap. They do a very funny bit called Slowly I Turn where a man goes nuts every time he hears the name Martha as the result of a bad breakup. Lucy gets the full brunt of the other clowns anger and sadness. It's so funny you can hear Desi Arnez laughing behind the cameras . The ending is pretty good too but it's hard to top the earlier segments.

Classic Lucy

To watch Lucy learn ballet and burlesque comedy routine how can you go wrong? The fun part is listening to Desi cracking up behind the camera. To bad the vaudeville act is dead I wish these types of comedy made a comeback.

Lucy the Ballerina...need I say more?!

Lucy and the instructor have such great chemistry! It's a shame there wasn't more interaction amongst them in later episodes. This is physical comedy at its best as Lucy attempts to prove she is a ballerina! I wasn't a bi fan of the "Martha" skit, though, and I thought the ending was very rushed since it was meant to be the climax to everything else.

Lucy's got all this talent bottled up in her, and Ricky is sitting on the cork.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a Mary Wickes you've never seen before. She has a seemingly French accent as a fancy tough ballerina instructor, hired by Ricky to choreographed a ballet for his newest show, which of course Lucy wants to get in to. Of course, Lucy is dreadful, and gets the Wickes treatment in the process. "Ha ba!" is one of those catch phrases I always remember from Lucy but forgot it was from this one. Of course, Mary Wickes is an instant scene stealer, and would later be apart of Lucy's two long running later sitcoms and continued working long after most of her colleagues were long gone, up past the "Sister Act" films. Lucy ends up doing the "Slowly I Turned" (which I remember from Abbott and Costello in "Lost in the Harem" in a different way), and she's very funny in the straight role. Lucy really showed what a game girl she was in order to get a laugh regardless of whether or not it was heavy pillows coming at her or a spray bottle or even a pie.

Beautiful Vivian Vance

Warning: Spoilers
This might be the best example of Lucy trying desperately to get into showbiz .

She tries out first as a ballerina but that proves to be exhausting and painful! The classic scene where she gets stuck on the ballet bar is one of the funniest and most often shown in history.

The second attempt is to train as a burlesque comedian. That is even funnier and you can even hear Desi's laughter offscreen. Apparently he would only attend the first table reading then attend to business behind the scenes. This explains his frequent laughter upon seeing the finished product for the first time. The Slowly I turn routine is hilarious. This episode takes full advantage of Lucille Ball's physical talents.

Finally this was one of the episodes that showed how beautiful Vivian Vance was.

Sometimes they allowed that to happen. She even had a beautiful evening gown in the last segment.

Definitely one of the strongest episodes of the first season.
