When Frank met Joyce
Woodyanders2 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Furillo (the always fine Daniel J. Travanti) gets shot on the steps of a courthouse by Randolph Scripps (an excellent portrayal by Kenneth Tigar). Davenport (a sturdy and affecting performance by Veronica Hamel) remembers how they first met while everyone else at the station tries to help out in one way or another.

This episodes packs quite a strong emotional punch, with the scenes showing how Furillo and Davenport initially crossed paths and fell in love coming across as especially sweet and moving. Moreover, it's also quite touching to watch the various ways people come through for Furillo in his time of greatest need: Washington (the smooth and likeable Taurean Blacque) donates blood, LaRue (solid Kiel Martin) frets about not being able to do anything, Daniels (bang-up work from Jon Cypher) is more sympathetic and less of a jerk than usual, and Buntz (a terrific Dennis Franz) takes Scripps down on a hospital staircase. And the climatic scene with Davenport breaking down and crying is simply devastating.

Tells the Story
Hitchcoc29 July 2021
When Fran goes to testify in a mob boss's trial (he has been hiding in Europe) he appears with Daniels on the steps and he is shot. He lies in the hospital, Joyce bent over him. Through flashbacks, she remember how they met. Fay is her acerbic worst in this one. Other characters appear from seven years before. We see how beloved Frank is as he lies on the brink. We get to see Daniels squirming, wondering how close to dying he became as he stood next to Frank. He can't say anything to Joyce without a caveat. Belker is frustrated as he works under cover at a meat processing plant. Even Howard has some moments of anxiety. I think they always saw the Captain as pretty invulnerable.

Furillo in Jeopardy

Although I'm not a huge fan of the Joyce Davenport character, Veronica Hamel does a good turn in this episode as she recalls how Joyce and Frank began their relationship. Jon Cypher, as Chief Daniels, is also excellent and shares his insight of how talented Frank is, and always was.

The reason I rated this episode so high is the emergence of Dennis Franz as a top tier actor. Few of us knew of him until producers wisely recast him in season six of Hill Street. His scene with Hamel early in the episode, is perfection. We see a side of Buntz we never knew. It is no wonder that Franz went on to redefine the cop character on NYPD Blue. He's now retired from acting, and I so miss him.

Torture
nbrice1822 January 2020
An entire episode of The Wicked Witch of the Hill, ice queen Joyce. Absolute torture. My husband watched it, and I only watched the parts without the most strident, shrill character in TV history.
