Charming episode

The marvelous Molly Picon embodies every Jewish grandmother from back in the day. And in this episode Gomer is wonderfully kind and smart. My favorite.

Warning: Spoilers
My maternal Grandmother was watching television when her eye lit up. She recognized an icon from the Yiddish theater Molly Picon. During the early part of the twentieth century the Yiddish theater was a staple for immigrants from eastern Europe in Lower Manhattan. The theater produced familiar names that cross-over into mainstream show business. Molly Picon was one of them . Cutesy different approach to a Gomer Pyle episode. Gomer siting on a seaside bench overlooking the blue Pacific is accompanied by an elderly Woman Molly Gordon played by the aforementioned Molly Picon. Gomer eating peanuts is asked by Molly when he had a decent lunch last. Gomer politely excepts her offer of making him a home cooked meal at her nearby apartment. She offers Gomer all the dishes a typical Jewish mother would provide from Gefilte fish, simmus, and flanken. After the meal Molly and Gomer sing old Jewish songs on her piano with tea in a glass. Watching this episode gave me fond memories of my two Grandmothers. Molly misses cooking for her son and his family. Her successful accountant son Sol (David Ketchum) exiled her to a small luxury apartment away from his family so she can slow down which Molly feels is ridiculous. To fill the void she wants Gomer to bring Sargent Carter (Frank Sutton) and Duke Slater (Ronnie Schell) over for dinner the following night. The Next night as the three Marines approach Molly's apartment her son Sol Gordon stops them at her front door telling them not to show up and that his Mom needs to rest and slow down and not feed the world. The rest of the episode will leave you full. Leave the left overs with Sargent Carter. Oh Bubbe I miss you!!!
