Tricky flashbacks

Warning: Spoilers
Melinda must confront her hostile mother (the ageless Anne Archer) in order to make right the situation for a little girl whom Melinda first knew back in grade school. The girl has died of leukemia, but at the time Melinda first encounters her, back in the second grade, she does not know how to help her. It takes the return of the ghost (Abigail Breslin) to get the ball rolling. The girl's parents are long divorced, which complicates matters. Archer is delightful as Melinda's sharp-tongued mother who harbors a deep, dark secret. The show's continuity is on display here, as the girl ghost goes from sickly-looking to absolutely radiant as she helps reunite her parents.

Abigail Breslin's acting...

Abigail Breslin's acting is the best one in the episode, honestly in the first season so far.

This show has been on my watchlist for a long time and now that I have time to watch it, I realize it is a fun show to watch despite the repetitive plot.

Congratulations to those in charge of casting.

The Title Is A Misnomer
juanruiz-6567918 July 2019
The series stands out for it use of children as the main characters. From S1 E2 to S5 E22, the take front and center. And, in each case, the actors portaying them do exceedingly well.

Another aspect of this episode is the title: it's wrong. From the pilot through introductions of the first and second seasons, it's made clear that Melinda's first ghost is the man at the funeral service, who asks her to deliver a message to his widow. Her bewilderment "Gramma, I don't understand." "You will, dear." makes that clear.

Aside from that it's another excellent script from an early period of the series.

Someone's review is wrong.

Someone stated that the title of this episode is a misnomer. This is incorrect. They go on in the review to say that in the pilot episode, through the introductions of the first and second season, that Melinda's first ghost was in fact the old man at the funeral. This is wrong. In this episode, "Melinda's First Ghost", she and Jim are having a conversation during breakfast, and Jim asks her if her grandma had told her about her gift before, and she replied with something along the lines of "no, this was way before that". Meaning, that Sarah Applewhite was indeed Melinda's first ghost.
