Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
owlaurence6 August 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The plot this week is a mix of Irish folklore and oriental elements (notably the Kali-like serpent and the soundtrack) with a pinch of the Blair Witch Project: a risky blend which could easily get out of hand but which works well enough here. The actress who plays the evil witch is good and looks really great (and on a side note, I would love to have hair like hers). On the other hand, there's an alarming casualty rate among innocents, which is rather bad for the Charmed Ones's image. And I cannot believe that the police never get involved. How can nobody (not even Jack) question why Prue, who was *filmed* arguing over that wand, suddenly has it with her -right after its rightful owner goes missing and her apartment is ransacked?

Anyway... What makes the plot particularly unusual, and therefore very interesting, is that the sisters are mere bystanders this time. They can't do anything against Tuatha. Their only role is to help and train her nemesis, a young diffident nerd who finds it difficult to believe that he might be chosen for anything... only they don't know how to train him, and don't want to let him fight, so the job finally lands on Leo's shoulders. Here we are reminded that, more than a healer or guardian angel, Leo is first and foremost a cheerleader of sorts. But obviously, his constant (and not too discreet !) presence in the house creates a very awkward situation. The tension with Piper is well played, and Dan's dismay at discovering that he's got a rival INSIDE the house (while he still hasn't been able to cross the threshold) makes for some really good scenes.

Before I finish, there are two little things I want to mention : first, I love Alyssa Milano's hairdo (yes, it is irrelevant, but I still want to mention it at least once) and second, this is Jenny's last appearance. Since she never did anything interesting, I kept wondering why on earth she was listed in the credits. Now I guess the scriptwriters came to the same conclusion: I don't know what plans they had for her, if they had any, but this looks rather unprofessional.

The Power of the Will
claudio_carvalho7 February 2007
While in a cave, two explorers accidentally release the powerful evil witch Tuatha, and she casts a spell killing them and sends her serpent to chase her magical wand. Meanwhile, Leo meets Piper and Phoebe, tells them that Tuatha is free and advises them that they should find a teenager called Kyle Gwideon, the seventh boy of a seventh generation, since he is the chosen one to handle the wand and destroy Tuatha. Prue coincidently gets the wand in Buckland and brings it home. Tuatha kills three hikers in the woods removing their hearts, casts another spell making the Halliwell sisters powerless, while Leo trains the coward Kyle, but the boy is afraid to face Tuatha.

"That Old Black Magic" is a funny episode of "Charmed" that plays with "The Blair Witch Project". Piper gets in trouble with Leo and Dan, and has to decide with whom she will stay. The show is entertaining and comic. My vote is seven.

The Terrifying Goddess Witch
champremixblackshot8 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the episode was so horrifying in a good way. Two innocent male treasure hunters went into the cave not knowing what lies ahead of their fates. Until they accidentally released the evil witch Tuatha who shrinks them down to about 2 to 3 inches tiny in size. She then picks them both up with ease, looking like a giant witch goddess to them as they were left helplessly dangling by her fingers before she feeds them to her pet snake. That's when they were consumed by the "giant" snake and met their demise. This scene was really terrifying when I watched it for the first time. I can't imagine being in their place.

The One With Tuatha...

Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. It's really interesting, it's a twist on the Blair Witch.

In this episode, teenagers go to try and find the Blair Witch, which is a really dumb idea in the first place. You don't go looking for an evil witch. Bad things will happen. Anyway, they go into a cave and a witch, Tuatha is accidentally released, and she kills the teenagers. Leo goes and tells the sisters that the witch has been released, and they need to find the seventh son of the seventh son, the only person on Earth who can stop her. They find the boy, who is still in high school, and try to convince him of his destiny. He denies it, obviously. But in the end, he believes and is able to defeat Tuatha. But not before she steals Prue, Piper and Phoebe's powers, leaving them stuck only making potions. They actually pretend one is a courage potion, to help Kyle, to boy, out. It was water.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10.

A Hot Witch, a Dork, and a Wand
seneuser9 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I get why other fans of Charmed have criticized this episode. It has clunky dialogue, unfortunate child acting, and the climatic duel for the wand is as humorous as it is suspenseful. However, this is a personal favorite of mine.

As I said before, I am a fan of the Season 2 love triangle, and this episode is where that plot-thread really takes off. Also, I am a fan of the antagonist being an attractive female, and we have that in the red-headed buxom witch Tuatha who is more than the sisters can handle, which is a new one.

No, this particular more experienced witch can only be defeated by the Chosen One, and therein lies the rub. The Chosen One happens to be a teenage boy with low self-esteem and few redeeming qualities. By time the dramatic showdown happens, you are almost pulling for the witch.

So, the real fun is that after Tuatha is awakened by a pair of unfortunate geeks seeking treasure, Leo shows up at the manor to tell the sisters. At the same time, Piper is walking in with Dan. Piper looks guilty as hell, and I guess the whole "I love you" thing from Love Hurts doesn't really mean a lot since she has already moved on to the man next door. Dan is concerned with Leo's appearance though not as concerned as he should be, while Leo just looks annoyed at Piper, as he has a right to be.

I get it though. The conflict isn't so much between Leo and Dan as it is between Piper living a normal life and a magical one. Piper has been irked both times Leo showed up, and she made it clear each time that Leo showing up meant her magical life, and responsibilities, coming with him.

The problem is that regardless of how perfect Dan is, Leo is right. Dan doesn't know he is dating a witch. He doesn't really know what he has gotten himself into. Piper doesn't need to keep any secrets from Leo. He is part of that world, and Piper is too whether she wants to face it or not. And as we have seen multiple times already, it is very GOOD to have Leo in her world. Even by the end of this episode, with Piper still yearning for that normal life and Leo orbing away as if accepting her wishes, we still already know they are meant to be together.

I also like that Leo warned the sisters not to take on Tuatha by themselves, and that he was right and they were wrong. It was cool to see a more experienced witch working her magic. Good touch by Prue with the placebo potion at the end. It worked for Ron Weasley too, so why not.

Oh, and Jack Sheridan is introduced as a co-worker/love interest for Prue in the beginning of this episode. Jack is a good character, but not a good boyfriend. I'm not sure what the writers had envisioned for him, but his existence in the end does nothing more than give Prue a BF so that Phoebe can be the lone single gal.

The Blair witch
Realrockerhalloween26 September 2016
Warning: Spoilers
A couple of hitchhikers stumble upon Tautha's cave freeing her and she goes on a search for her wand. Now the charmed ones must find and train the chosen one to yield it against her. While I enjoy the concept I found a few problems here making it feel clunky such as Tautha still allowed the witch title instead of being a warlock, having almost unlimited powers not even high demons have or going more into detail how she became connected to a chosen one. The Blair witch theme was huge during this time allowing them to copy the theme without thinking the plot holes through, but leaving them open left it up to be abused later on when the writers for last and thought special effects were cool instead of a sound story like here.

Another aspect was the charmed ones giving the chosen one Kyle confidence since he's picked on and raise him from a zero to a hero. If not for the pep talks, flirting from Jenny and a placebo to boost his confidence the charmed ones would be roast. I miss the way they have to think of creative ways to vanquish evil here like with Kyle & wand instead of a potion or spell for every creature.
