Illusion and Homage to Cinema
claudio_carvalho16 March 2007
When the Demon of Illusion threatens Prue and Phoebe at their home, the sisters chase him and he hides in a movie theater. Phoebe casts a spell to vanquish the demon, but he actually is transported to the screen of Phoebe's favorite movie "Kill It Before It Dies". The lead character Billy, with whom Phoebe has a great and old crush, is brought to the real world, together with the invincible killers The Slasher and Bloody Mary, who were assigned by the Demon of Illusion to kill the Halliwell sisters. Meanwhile, Prue is assigned by Gil Corso to photograph her idol, the famous photographer Finley Beck. However, her illusion is destroyed when she realizes how arrogant and stupid the guy is. Phoebe recalls how The Slasher and Bloody Mary are destroyed in the movies, and the sisters successfully kill them.

"Chick Flick" is one of the best episodes of the Second Season of "Charmed", where illusion and homage to the cinema are the basis of the plot. The association with "The Purple Rose of Cairo" and "Pleasantville" is immediate, with characters going to and coming from the screen and real world. There is also a nice joke with "Psycho", when Piper hides herself in the bathtub. The Slasher and Bloody Mary plays with the serial killers of the horror movies franchise. Prue finds also that sometimes the illusionary image we make of our idols may not correspond to the reality In the end, this episode is recommended for film boys and girls. My vote is nine.

Anyone up for a horror movie?

Warning: Spoilers
Prue is attacked by a demon of illusion causing the Charmed ones to trap him inside the movie screen and there beings movie monsters to life. Another statement about feminism through horror films as they girls don't walk into allies to get killed, but fight back and destroy the monster. Even the lead man Billy, shown as a typical 50s horror hero, needs these women to save him and adds humor when he acts brave it speaks out of data. My favorite shot is Piper hiding in the shower, knowing its a bad idea as someone approaches and a hand pulls back to reveal her sister.

During the adventure Phoebe falls for Billy as he was her first crush learning to look inside for the kind and sensitive man underneath. So far it seemed Phoebe wanted tall, dark and handsome bad boy, but every time lives romance instead of superficial traits I respect.

One of my favorite episodes

Warning: Spoilers
Growing up and watching charmed was an immensely enjoyable and memorable time for me. They're episodes that will immediately make me feel better, be it that they're a little cheesy or be it that they're over the top. Chick Flick is one of those episodes that just makes me feel better. The humor, the dialogue, the acting are just fun and the cast leans into it. This episode was released when I was 3 years old at the time, but it genuinely has stood the test of time every time that I watch it. One of my favorite lines has to be; "I think you're swell Phoebe. But I don't know how this happened or how I'm supposed to be. Everything I've ever known, understood, touched it's all been scripted, I had no choice. But here, here you have options. Where to go, what to say, what to do". The love I have for this episode is unfathomable.

One of my favorite episodes growing up.

Warning: Spoilers
Only now I realized how corny it can be. I still like the humor, these harmless digs at the horror genre, and the fun chase scene at the manor (which reminded me a lot of Scream 3 third act), but in spite of being a great premise, for the time of its release, it is executed poorly and is a bit disappointing overall, with scenes that drag the episode down too often. At least the actors looked like they were having fun doing it, and it showed. And it was back when Prue was trying out the photographer's career, which is one of my favorite plots of the season.

Last Action Hero, but bad
maddyjames-501-17259328 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The plot is clearly ripped directly from Last Action Hero and then adapted to deal with witches and whatnot. Absolutely terrible.
