Quotes

  • Ranger Norm Keller : We call him Pop Smith. He's a good man, has broad streak of rugged individualism. Doesn't take too kindly to the products of civilisation.

    Fred Lewis : That's a refreshing change.

  • Ruth Thompson : 'Morning, Ranger Norm.

Ranger Norm Keller : 'Morning, Ruth. All set for a big day in the village?

Ruth Thompson : Oh, you bet. I've got a dozen things to do too. I'm sure glad you could come take over the fire watch today.

Ranger Norm Keller : Must get lonely up here? You ought to call for relief more often.

Ruth Thompson : Lonely? After nine months of facing 40 schoolchildren with Shakespeare and Shelley, why being up here on my own each summer is the high point of my year. Better get going. Your wife radioed about an hour ago, wants to speak to you right away.

Ranger Norm Keller : I'll call her.

Ruth Thompson : I made a pot of coffee. Help yourself, won't you.

    Ranger Norm Keller : Thanks.

Ruth Thompson : And keep a sharp lookout now. The weather is awfully dry. I don't want any fires in my section while I'm away.

  • Ranger Norm Keller : Wickerby Tower calling Warehouse. Wickerby calling Warehouse. Wickerby calling Warehouse.

Mary Keller : Warehouse to Wickerby. How's the weather up there, Darling?

Ranger Norm Keller : The weather's fine, Mary. But remember, this is an open frequency.

Adams : No one is listening but us fire-watchers so you good ahead and call him anything you want, Mrs Ranger. Indian Crest over and out.

Mary Keller : Thank you, Mr Adams. Now, Wickerby, you just received a wire from the Continental Lumber Company. Two of their executives will be here tomorrow at noon. Guess that means fixing them lunch.

Ranger Norm Keller : Feed them mountain lion, that'd impress them. Anything else?

Mary Keller : Yes. Sheriff Payne was by earlier this morning, says he has to see you straightaway. There's trouble of some kind. He's on his way to the lookout now.

Ranger Norm Keller : I'll be expecting him.

Mary Keller : See you tomorrow, Darling. Warehouse over and out.

    [Norm smiles indulgently]

  • Ranger Norm Keller : Mary, You shouldn't walk across the yard dressed like that. Porky killed two rabbits last week.

Mary Keller : [She is wearing a floating robe with a huge bow at the waist]  There you go spoiling any romantic illusion, I'm wearing my boots.

[ie her cowboy boots which add to spoiling the romantic illusion]

  • Ranger Norm Keller : [Voiceover by Norm as he rides his horse through the forest, by a lake]  The place, one of America's great national parks, the man, that's me, Norm Keller, one of the thousands of forest rangers whose duty it is to protect and manage these lands, 300,000 acres of mile high timber, grazing land, watersheds, and wildlife. To the forest ranger the maintenance and protection of it is a full-time job. And this is seventy-two hours of it, some of it pleasant, some of it not so pleasant, but all of it based on fact.
