CORONADO 9 – Blonde Herring - 1961
Coronado 9 was a one season Private Eye series that ran during, 1960-61. Rod Cameron plays a former Navy Intelligence officer who decides to set up shop as a private investigator. He works out of his beach front house in San Diego. This is episode 38 of the series.
In this one, Rod Cameron is hired by the US government to get the goods on a middle-east gold smuggling racket. He flies out to a port on the Persian Gulf to start his investigation. The main suspects are the lovely blonde Carol Ohmart and the Captain of a tramp steamer, Hugh Sanders.
Camron goes undercover as a man on the run from the Police. He bribes the first officer, Harry Lauter, to give him a room on the steamer. Part of his cover is that he is a small time smuggler. He has 10 grand in gold bars with him. He hopes to get 15 grand for the gold when the ship docks in Bombay. At least that is his cover story. He spends the first few days playing cards with a ditzy blonde singer, Sue Ann Langdon. Langdon is the girlfriend of the first officer, Lauter.
Sure enough, Ohmart, Lauter and Sanders are part of the smuggling ring. Once at sea, they rough up Cameron and search his cases. They find the gold and take it. They do not want any small timers queering their set up. They move hundreds of pounds of gold at a time.
They do however ask Cameron to join their racket. But he needs to prove himself. The gang has captured a Police agent, Charles Davis. Cameron is told to deep six Davis to prove his loyalty to his new boss. The boss turns out to be Sue Ann Langdon. The lounge singer bit is a cover to hide her involvement in the racket.
Needless to say Cameron pulls a hidden gun and the fight is on. Several gang members are given a lead overdose before the Coast Guard is summoned to arrest the rest.
