Who stole the body of a great Minbari warrior?
Tweekums29 July 2018
Following the death of Branmer, a great Minbari warrior, it is requested that his body lay in state aboard Babylon 5 so respects can be paid. Commander Sinclair accepts and arrangements are made. Neroon, the Minbari commander returning the body insists that only Minbari guards are present. The next day it emerges that Branmer's body has vanished... Neroon is furious and blames Sinclair; Garibaldi starts investigating. In a secondary story a nascent telepath's abilities awaken; both Ivanova and telepath Talia Winters are there at the time and each has differing views about what should happen to the girl; Talia believes she must return to Earth and Psi Corps, Ivanova believes she should explore other options before deciding.

This was an enjoyable episode with two interesting stories that ultimately combine to give a satisfying conclusion. The story of Branmer's body gives us further insights into Minbari culture and social structure as well as reminding us that not all Minbari agree with their decision to surrender at the Battle of the Line. The story does have one unfortunate, and rather obvious plot hole; why does nobody point out that Minbari were in charge of guarding the body when Neroon says he will hold Sinclair responsible? The story of the young telepath is also enjoyable; as well as the question of what will ultimately become of the girl it reminds us that the Narn are the only major race without telepaths before finally leading to the discovery of the truth about what happened to Branmer's body. As the episode reaches its conclusion things are mentioned that will no doubt be important in upcoming episodes. Overall another solid episode that provides character development and a decent story.

Very satisfying

Unlike the rather hammed up episode "Eyes" this was far more subtle and nuanced and introduces us to several story arc events of great import.

Furthermore, Ivanova and Winter's ongoing conflict get some decent screentime, and we get an insightful peek into the dynamics of Minbari social structure, hierarchy and politics and Delen's place therein.

Not all is what it seems.

Only okay

Warning: Spoilers
This is only an okay episode, as the biggest problem with the show is that the solution to the theft of a dead Minbari leader's body is pretty obvious and because of this, the writing wasn't all that great. Considering that the humans were NEVER allowed to be near the body or guard it, for the Minbari to later blame Sinclair and make a big fuss about how the humans stole it seems really silly. The only possible explanation is that a Minbari stole it, so the ultimate resolution is no surprise at all!! Also, there is a lot of silly macho posturing in this show--something that seems silly for people as supposedly advanced as the Minbari. However, in general, the antagonism of the Warrior Caste towards the humans is an interesting plot element and does quite a bit to further the ongoing plot. Not a terrible episode, but certainly a bit below average

By the way, my daughter also saw this episode and was really annoyed by the acting of the young telepath. In her words (after I removed the expletives) she was really terrible. But given her age, she hopes that she later improved her craft and was able to deliver better performances.

Babylon 5--Legacies
Scarecrow-885 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
John Vickery's hotheaded Minbari, Neroon, is an interesting character in that his behavior, forceful, blunt, and aggressive (it seems that the warrior caste of the Minbari are a bit more assertive, fierce, and willing to fight if necessary; hair-trigger is apt in describing Neroon when he first arrives, particularly when his revered leader's body wound up missing), is quite opposite of Mira Furlan's more cerebral, mannered, and diplomatic (well spoken, with better hindsight and seeing the bigger picture while wholly loyal and adherent to the beliefs and customs of her people; her association with the religious caste explains her approach to the fragile peace that currently exists between humans and the Minbari) . His ship exits the jump gate with guns open (although they are not in operation) as a tribute to the Minbari leader who has passed on. The Babylon 5 station will function as a place for the ceremonial "funeral" of the leader but there were specific instructions left to Delenn that has her harboring dissatisfaction with how Neroon wants to "send off" Branmar. I think "Legacies" is mostly about the obvious tension and still-existing unease that exists between humans and Minbari. From the beginning, Commander Sinclair's often up against the wounds that have healed but often bleed just a little when memories of the Earth-Minbari war revive in mind, and reminders like "great warrior" Branmar (who "splashed" Sinclair's line of defense against the Minbari "on the line") only rekindle the hurt/harm once caused. Neroon insists, prior to the ceremony, that no humans are allowed near the chamber or the body of Branmar, but when the corpse is found stolen, it is all Sinclair's fault (why, I'm not sure) it seems. I think this is part of the problem of the episode. Neroon has no reason whatsoever to threaten or be cross with Sinclair when he himself posted Minbari to guard the ceremonial chamber. Yet Neroon goes around pushing buttons and even engaging in fisticuffs with Sinclair at one point (Neroon was searching Sinclair's quarters looking for the body!), definitely on the receiving end of a beating. Sinclair, despite Neroon's hissy fit, does have Garibaldi and his security search the entire station for the body of Branmar.

The alternate subplot involves a young woman, surviving in near poverty on the grittier, edgier part of the station through petty theft, hitting puberty with a level high in psychic power. Lt. Commander Ivanova wants her to avoid Psi Corps while Talia wants her to go. Once again, we see Ivanova and Talia clash because of their differing views on Psi Corps, primary due to Ivanova's mother's tragic fate. Ivanova wants the loss of her mother to resonate with Grace Una's Alisa because she believes Psi Corps is evil while Talia is completely dedicated to the group, believing the horror stories are often exaggerated. So you have Alisa trying to decide where she wants to take her talents, with Psi Corps, the Narn regime, and Delenn's Minbari all with potential offers for her services. If she decides not to join Psi Corps and were to return to Earth, she would have to take drugs to defuse her telepathic talents. The ending is neat and tidy, of course, but Alisa did see something in Delenn's mind (chrysalis) that leaves Sinclair inquisitive.

Not an episode that works as a great (or even good) example of the show provided to prospective viewers with an interest in Babylon 5, "Legacies" does further the story involving the heavy past and difficult peaceful relations between humans and Minbari. Incorporate the terrorist, Anti-Minbari group, Homeworld into the mix during the show, seeing Neroon and Sinclair actually communicating and shaking hands in a respective manner does elicit hope that relations between the two species can be made in time.
