Bitter end is nigh
stones789 July 2012
This once great show has lost most of its' steam by this point in the series, as Mike and Gloria are nowhere to be found, and bratty Stephanie is an unfortunate show regular, which probably led to the demise as well. Perhaps the most redeeming factor of this very forgotten episode is the final appearance of Louise Jefferson(Isabel Sanford), who visits the Bunkers and tells them something about her old house next door, but I don't quite recall exactly what was said; it probably had to do with the new neighbors moving in shortly, and Edith acting almost as a real estate agent trying to help Weezy sell it. Archie isn't exactly thrilled when he discovers the new neighbors are black like the former neighbors, the Jefferson's, and a part of me wonders if the producers tried to create another scenario like years past with tension between Archie and this new couple. There were only 2 more episodes before this great series came to a merciful end, although Polly(Janet MaLachlan)makes a few appearances in Archie Bunker's Place as well as here; Richard Ward also stars as Polly's husband Ed. Even though most of this episode seems forced and very tired, Carroll O' Connor still gives a fine performance and is still very funny, although the writing's on the wall that this show is past its' prime. There are a few funny moments, and even a few old faces show up, but I wouldn't highly recommend the later seasons, especially after Mike and Gloria leave town, and annoying Stephanie becomes more frequent.
