Robert Ryan plays Jeff Banner. A cop who has to be holed up somewhere remote to guard Ann Palmer.
She is an essential witness to testify against a mob boss. She feels she is just doing her duty.
Banner even tells her that her life would be easier if she just ran away.
Ann does not realise that Banner is a crooked cop. He plans to set her up so the mob boss will kill her.
However in the following days, Palmer makes Banner see himself as a cop. To uphold the law and protect. He also does not realise that the mob boss plans to double cross him.
There is some nice interplay between Banner and Ann. It brings out Banner's human side. You get a glimpse as to why he took backhanders as the police pay was lousy.
