"But He's Nobody's Hero... " ( - Canadian Rock Trio, Rush)
chashans18 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Actor A. Martinez appears in one of his earliest roles. This episode aired in 1970. As I write this, 53 years later in the year 2023, Martinez's acting career is still going strong. Here he plays Lauro Perez, a young man who heroically runs into a burning building and saves the life of an elderly Security Guard. Officers Malloy and Reed are on scene, and later are among Officials who honor the young man for his heroics. However, through-out the proceedings, Lauro is constantly distant and on-edge. M & R can't help but wonder why.

This is an very good episode of Adam-12. The viewer is immediately drawn into the mystery as to why this "hero" keeps acting so "hinky" (as Malloy might put it.) Afterall, the Detective from the Arson Squad has nailed the culprit who set the fire. He's even informed M & R that there's no suspicions of Lauro Perez at all whatsoever. Although oddly, every time this Detective is near Lauro, he continuously gives him the once-over like he's the one responsible for the Chicago fire.

The episode is filled with great scenes. Right at the start, Malloy is enamored with his shiny new Policeman's Cap. Certainly Officer Malloy will never let this new cap out of his sight and therefore nothing bad whatsoever will happen to it. Right?

The scene with the building fire is very good. The building seems to be real, meaning not just a prop-building on a studio lot. The blazing inferno inside the building is certainly real. Actors A. Martinez and Martin Milner look like they really feel the heat of the flames which are practically right on them.

Later there's a nice scene at Lauro's home. Lauro's father has gathered a group of family and friends to celebrate Lauro's heroism and new found celebrity. The show's production actually has the father give a bit of a speech, the entire time speaking spanish. There are no subtitles for viewers. This just seems to me that this was probably very much out of the ordinary for a televsion production in the 1960's/early 70's. A terrific move on the part of Adam-12's producers and writers.

There is some comedy relief in the guise of a drunk dangling out of a window at the top of a four-story building. (At least he's not a drunk driver which Adam-12 sometimes will feature, also for comic relief, oddly.) While the drunk is a happy drunk and was only dangling out the window to get some air, the more comic moment comes prior to Malloy and Reed encountering the drunk. Malloy first goes to the wrong apartment and, concerned for the possibly suicidal person dangling out the window, straight-away opens the door of the wrong apartment. A shocking, worrisome sight awaits. Funny stuff.

The Direction on this episode is also very good. However, the Direction of the scenes both outside and inside the Church toward the end of the episode is exceptional. Just excellent. The beautiful interior of the Church certainly aids the scene. The cinematography/camera angles which captures this beauty is of Emmy Award winning status. But no, there was no Emmy given to Adam-12 here. That was and is still quite unfortunate.

A great episode of Adam-12, right down to Malloy's Brand New soot-covered, chocolatety Policeman's Cap.

Honor Is Everything Warning: Spoilers
(*Officer Reed to Officer Malloy quote*) - "You got soot all over your new hat."

Lauro Perez shows some real heroism as he rescues a man trapped in a burning warehouse.

In the meantime, Officer Malloy saves a man's life by giving him CPR.
