Jesus Rocks
Rectangular_businessman22 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this Bill Plympton's short animation included in the movie "Mutant Aliens", and personally, I think that it is more enjoyable and makes much more sense in the context of that movie.

Like most of the animations done by Bill Plympton, this is something quite irreverent, and like the other reviewer said, it could offend some viewers. Personally I think that this wasn't worse than any of the stuff that you could see in animated sitcoms like "South Park", "Family Guy" or "Robot Chicken".

If you dislike the comedy style from those series I've mentioned, then you probably won't like this very much.

Very Funny Although Many Will Be Offended

Can't Drag Race with Jesus (2000)

*** (out of 4)

Funny two-minute short has a preacher singing a song about a drag racing Jesus with a chorus backing him up. While the song is going on we then see this rocking Jesus do his thing. If you're going to be offended by anything that isn't straight out of the Bible then I'd suggest you not watch this short. The thing certainly isn't mean-spirited but at the same time I can only imagine a lot of people not wanting to see Jesus playing a rock punk. We get scenes of him racing his car but also doing sexual gestures with his guitar and even a woman in the stands flashing him. Again, there's nothing here overly offensive and I got a good laugh out of it all but your brand of humor will depend on how well you enjoy this thing.

I am not exactly sure what to think about this one....

"Can't Drag Race With Jesus" is probably one of the strangest and most inexplicable cartoons made by Bill Plympton. And, after watching it, I am not sure what I think of it or what he had in mind when he made this one. It consists of an old fashioned preacher and his choir singing a ditty "Can't Drag Race With Jesus"--during which time you see Jesus drag race, play an electric guitar and act very un-Jesus-like. It is bound to offend MANY but my biggest problem is that I just didn't think it was all that funny. However, at only two minutes and COUNTLESS other great shorts, I say to cut Mr. Plympton some slack. Well animated but odd...

I should note that a few years ago, I met Bill Plympton and bought some DVDs from him at a convention. When I asked about buying "Bill's Dirty Shorts" (of which "Sex and Violence" is a part of) he STRONGLY recommended I not because I told him my 16 year-old loved his work. So, instead I got a few other DVDs and, inexplicably, he seemed so normal and nice--not the sort to make a raunchy (but hilarious) film collection like this one!
