Close but not enough inches for Tennesse! Rams win!
blanbrn3 February 2008
"Super Bowl XXXIV" would turn out to be one of the better ones played in recent memory as the game would go down to the wire. It featured the surprise and upstart NFC champion St. Louis Rams coached by legendary Dick Vermil they had rode the miracle arm all season long of Kurt Warner against the AFC champ Tennesse Titans who had rode the workhorse legs of RB Eddie George and mirrored their tough and gritty coach Jeff Fisher so well. The game would start with the Titans defense putting on a lot of pressure it slowed the Rams offense. Even though that Kurt Warner would throw for 277 1st half pass yards the Rams would only take a 9-0 halftime lead yet the defense would have held Eddie George to only 30 yards rushing. The second half would prove to be a classic going into the final quarter tied at 16-16. It would then be broken up when game MVP Kurt Warner would throw a 73 yard TD pass to Issac Bruce to go ahead 23-16. The Titans would get the ball back and drive far down field yet only a pass completion to WR Kevin Dyson would come close, but fall short as he was tackled at the one yard line! Close call and great Super Bowl Rams win 23-16!!

Warning: Spoilers
Warning: contains spoilers. And yet this game was played 5 years ago so you really ought to know what happened by now.

The St. Louis Rams were one of the biggest surprises of the 1999 NFL season. The Rams went 4-12 in 1998, and things looked less than encouraging after starting QB Trent Green was injured in the preseason. Former Arena League QB and Hy-Vee stock boy Kurt Warner stepped in and St. Louis ended up with one of the most explosive offenses in the league. On the other side, the Tennessee Titans made it to the big game thanks in no small part to one of the most spectacular and controversial plays in playoff history, the Music City Miracle. Trailing 16-15 with :16 left, the Titans ran a kickoff all the way back as time expired to beat Buffalo in the AFC Wild Card game. The question was whether or not Frank Wycheck's lateral to Kevin Dyson on the play was in fact a lateral or an illegal forward pass.

Tennessee found the going rough early on as Jeff Wilkins kicked 3 field goals in the first half to give the Rams a 9-0 lead heading in to the locker room. The second half got off to a good start for the Titans on offense as they set themselves up for a 47-yard field goal attempt from Al Del Greco, but Todd Lyght blocked the kick and the score remained 9-0, but not for long. Warner threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Torry Holt to push the lead to 16, which is when things got good. Eddie George capped off a scoring drive with a 1-yard plunge, the two-point conversion failed but the Titans were on the board. Moments later it was George again, this time from 2 yards out to pull Tennessee within a field goal at 16-13. Not long after that, it was tied as Del Greco knocked in a 43-yarder to set up one of the most exciting 2-minute spans in Super Bowl history. After a season full of big plays, St. Louis picked up one more as Warner, the MVP of the game, hit Isaac Bruce on a 73-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead 23-16 with 1:54 left in the game. St. Louis looked ready to celebrate, Steve McNair and the Titans were looking for another miracle. Tennessee drove to the St. Louis 10 yard line, and with six seconds left and no timeouts remaining McNair hit Dyson at the 3 yard line. Dyson reached for the end zone as St. Louis linebacker Mike Jones dragged him down, landing just 1 yard shy of the goal line. The Rams had barely held on for their first Super Bowl championship in franchise history, in one of the best Super Bowls since, well, at least Super Bowl XXXII.
