Yuletime A-Ha

Steve Coogan reprises his role of talk show host Alan Partridge for this Christmas special that can be found on the second disk of the 2-disc set of the show "Knowing me, Knowing You with Alan Partridge". Nothing's mentioned of what happened after Alan shot that guy on the last episode of his series, but other then that anyone who like the series will adore this Christmas special as well. It has the same dry humor, well strike that, the humor is quite broad in this special, but I still enjoyed it all the same. Now I'll just have to figure out how to watch the two "I'm Alan Partridge" series and catch the upcoming movie and I'll be pretty much set.

My Grade: B

And on that festive bombshell...

Quite how Alan Partridge managed to wangle the BBC into giving him his own Xmas special after murdering Forbes McAllister in his last TV appearance is a mystery. But since disaster clings to his heels and everything he touches becomes a shambles he is always worth watching to see his ever-increasing denial of the trouble he is in.

In this Xmas special he has created a mock-up of his very own living room in the TV studio. He tries to create a cozy Xmas atmosphere with a large tree, a crackling log fire and frequent visits to Fanny Thomas, a whorish TV chef cooking up Xmas snacks in his kitchen. His guests are a typically incongruous lot consisting of a Christian Zealot, Chief Commissioning Editor of BBC Programs (and Alan's arch-Nemesis) Tony Hayers and a pro-golfer who's career was robbed from him when he was struck by lightning. Also on the guest-list a car-dealer from a local Rover showroom dressed up as Santa who uses Alan to shamelessly plug his cars, which is illegal on the BBC.

As you probably know, Alan is notorious for insulting his guests and is frequently intimidated by anyone who is not completely normal. There is no shortage of his loathsome personality and it leads to some harsh confrontations between him and the interviewees. But it's all hilarious.

Since I only ever saw this for the first time yesterday I haven't been able to make an Xmas tradition of it but I will from now. It's brilliant!

A Partridge in a pear tree.

Re-visiting the classic Blackadder's Christmas Carol (1988) a few days ago,I started checking my box sets for other Comedy X-Mas specials to watch again. With him being my introduction to the work of Armando Iannucci and Steve Coogan,I got set to attend Alan Partridge's Christmas House Party.

View on the ep:

Bringing the curtain down on the Knowing Me era of the series, writers Steve Coogan,Armando Iannucci,Patrick Marber & Rebecca Front pull a cracker of a final ep, which satirically mocks all-star chat show specials, with hilarious, sparkling dialogue that sends Partridge falling into every mishap and uncomfortable long pause with his guests.Done as a extravagance special for the chat show, director Dominic Brigstocke breaks Alan's show with fantastic visual sight-gags of would-be set-pieces falling apart, and ill-judged attempts at underhanded product placement. Becoming a throne in the series in the next series, David Schneider gives BBC head Tony Hayers a fittingly slimy manner which causes Steve Coogan to have Partridge be wonderfully ill at ease, as Alan pulls the cracker on his career.
