Forbidden Fruits is a dynamic urban love story that reveals the interplay and complexities of cultural traditions, family values and personal beliefs. The film directly explores multicultural relationships, stereotypes and the human emotion - Love. Filmed in Detroit city Forbidden Fruits has unique and charismatic scenery.

I highly recommend this film because it encourages dialogue and discussion. Examining real life experiences of racial generalizations and preconceived notions Forbidden Fruits is highly dramatic and informative.

The Poor Man's CRASH
Sherazade3 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I say this because I kept having a feeling that this was a lower budget version of the 2004 Hollywood hit movie CRASH.

Okay Marc Cayce (who incidentally wrote and directed this soap opera) plays the main character, a preacher's son who has it made (rich father, real estate, set future etc. etc.) but decides to go out into the streets of Detroit to hustle with the dirt bag hustlers which ultimately leads to a downfall he could never have predicted. That's just a side story though, the main story deals with racism and the message of the movie is that in one way or the other, we are all racists and we need to get over our prejudices. The film begins with Cayce's character and his cousin Brian (played by Moesha's Fredro Starr) driving past a as station and noticing a Black man purchasing gas from Cayce's father's business rival. They then decide to attack and rough up the man for doing so and this provides the background for the racism that will soon be set it play. I mean, you have Black on Black hate, Arab on Black hate and vice versa, Chaldean on Black hate etc. etc. (Chaldeans, in case you were wondering and Christians from Iraq and are not to be confused with Arabs who happen to be Muslims). The hating extends through a common denominator which is the fact that all these people are connected in one way or the other. Cayce's character's sister Nicole (played by the luminous Taral Hicks) is dating an Arab on the DL (Down Low) and his cousin Brian is also on the DL dating a Chaldean girl. Vanessa-Renee Romero plays a character named Amina who runs with the Mexican crowd and dresses like slut which conflicts with her faith, her brother on the other hand is dating a Black girl(Taral Hicks) and so on and so forth but I'm sure you already catch my drift.

As if you haven't imagined it yet, all these characters are gonna connect towards the end when an avoidable tragedy unites most of them. The worst part of the film is the fact that most of the characters can't act but blame that on the low budget and bad casting. The message is clear though. Our ignorance is our own misfortune. Keith David is exceptionally good as the Reverend Walters, Taral Hicks shines as usual, Keith Sweat breaks new ground as a Terrence the thug and I'm forgetting the name of the woman who played the reverends wife, but she was good too.

Don't miss the most hilarious of scenes ever, where Cayce's character runs into an elder church member and her niece in the street! It is arguably the single best scene in the film, next to the wedding scene. Cayce also deserves major props for showing us the picturesque beauty of the city and suburbs of Detroit.

Luckily this movie probably won't make the theaters
jeremywin2051 November 2005
Let me start off by saying that I was at the premiere of this movie and I suppose its possible for the film to go back into post-production. Hence, a few things could be fixed, though I seriously doubt it will be.

This movie is bad, very bad. It has a lot of problems, like acting, directing, cinematography, and even the picture quality. However, it does have a certain 'documentary-like' quality that can be educational.

The movie looks at the interaction of the many different races and religions that make up the Detroit-metro area. Mainly focusing on secret romantic African American/Arab and African American/Chaldean relationships, with a small Jewish story-line thrown in as well.

I won't waste my time or yours overly analyzing this movie because I don't feel like its worth it. But I will say that if you have any interest in Detroit and how it became an 'gathering place' for both African Americans and Middle Easterners then this might be of some interest to you. If not, please don't waste your time with this movie.

I, myself, only saw it because I have a friend who had a part in the movie. I enjoyed the focus on Detroit and it's history because I was born there and still live in the metro area. However, at the risk of losing all credibility with anyone who will be reading this, I firmly believe I could have done a better job in almost any phase of making this movie.

The Worst Movie in the WORLD!
CreoleInDC26 December 2006
I'm sorry but this movie was worse than anything I have ever seen in my life. It was just AWFUL! Geez! I want to demand my money back from Blockbuster for even having it on their shelves! The acting was terrible. The directing was terrible. The story...hideous. Man...just too much for words. I don't really have anything else to say except to just warn everyone to steer clear of this movie if they don't want to get annoyed. The guy who directed this movie should really find someone else to pick projects for him because he didn't do a good job with this concept at all. To sum it up...this movie was hideously terrible. Hilarious (not in a good way)
sylviamaye28 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Not only was the film cheap looking but the acting was less than mediocre. I laughed the entire time; not at any comedic performance but because of how bad this movie was. I was excited about the synopsis on the back and was assured that even though it was a low budget film it would be good (most likely).

Wrong answer! I should have known better when I saw Keith Sweats name flash across the screen. The pairings were interesting but a little bit too ironic. The sister of a black man gets with a middle eastern man and the black man, in turn, gets with the middle eastern man's sister all the while everyone is objecting to the others relationship...coincidence? I won't "spoil" the movie for you (though the whole thing is a spoil if you ask me) but the ending is very unrealistic and just down right cheesy. I'd have to say the best part was when the credits rolled.

I was happy that they explained some of the cultures and the origin of them. If it had been a documentary I probably would have watched and enjoyed it more than this waste of film Marc Cayce pulled out of the porcelain throne. This movie could have been a lot better and I was VERY disappointed because the plot seemed so interesting.

Maybe someone else, years from now, will remake this movie and show Marc how it's done.

A Wonderful Love Story Movie With Miss America's Beauty: Rima Fakih.
sweetjudy12 November 2014
A wonderful love story between an African American/Christian girl and an Arabic Muslim man, and the racial division between the two different cultures.

This Movie deserves a high rating,it is truthful with good romance .

Forbidden Fruits (2006) features Miss America's Muslim Beauty Queen Rima Fakih.

The Acting Is Wonderful. We Know That If There Are Some Terrorist Muslim Groups Like Isis,Not All Muslims Are Evil.

As There Are Some Christian Clergy Men Who Have Gay Sex With Other Men In The Vatican & Who Practice Pederasty & Pedophilia .There Are Some Some Good Christians & Some Good Muslims.

The Story Is Convincing & Believe Me The Film Is Worth Watching & Buying!.

Forbidden Fruits' Movie Deserves To Win Awards.

Very good film
honeyp620029 October 2006
I just rented this movie on DVD and I really enjoyed it. I'm from Detroit so I could be a little bias. However, I enjoyed seeing Detroit and the other suburbs photographed so beautifully. I found the explanation of how the Chaldeans, Arabs, and Muslems migrated to Detroit very informative. The cast was not only talented but very easy on the eyes.

The most interesting and comedic part of the DVD had to be in the special features section listening to the directors commentary. No offense, but it really seemed like Marc Cayce screwed over a lot of people to get this independent film made.

Oh yeah, one more thing.....The soundtrack for this film was off the chain! I would purchase it today if I could.

Purchase, A Must

Purchase, A Must

This movie is a much purchase. This movie talks about issues that are tabu in our communities among blacks and Arabs such as interacial relationships. The movie should be watched in our homes in order to bring dialog to the things that are never thought of or mentioned, but does occur and is often wondered. I think this is an excellent movie. I love to see movies were racism is addressed. I really like how this movie touches issues on interracial couples and dating outside your religion. There are a few things I'll give to this movie. I thought it was on point when it showed males of color opining that they could date interracially, but not their sisters. Others said, "It's okay to do that, so long as it isn't one of my family members." There is also an emphasis on, "Be civil to them, but don't take them home!" These are all dynamics that are common in the US, for those who are honest enough to admit it. I think this movie is well worth the buy.

Well Intended Film on Race Relations in Detroit
hypestyle17 February 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The film attempts to juggle several story lines at once, attempting to tell a story of cross-racial romance and ethnic tolerance in contemporary America.

In this tale, based in and around Detroit, Michigan, three ethnic families are centered on: An African-American family who live in suburban Detroit; an Arab American Muslim family in nearby Dearborn; also a Chaldean-American family is featured-- somewhat of a little-discussed ethnicity in the national dialogue about middle-eastern derived Americans, Chaldeans are culturally Christian (they identify as Catholics but their religious hierarchy is separate from the Vatican), historically hailing from the northern regions of Iraq and border areas of Syria.

The principal characters are all college students (certain exteriors clearly identify Wayne State University), who are secretly dating someone of another racial background that their families are assumed to be disapproving of.

Here, a form of racial detente is presumed to exist among the communities-- It is alleged by the filmmaker that a preponderance of Arab and Chaldean families own most independent retail businesses in Detroit boundaries, e.g. gas stations, grocery stores, and liquor stores. Like Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing", the film highlights the social tensions with non-black store proprietors operating in predominantly black neighborhoods, and the mutual charges of harassment (verbal and sexual), racial profiling, and territorialism in business ownership and support.

Regarding the dating relationships featured in the film, everyone's parents and friends have something drastically negative to say about their family member's paramour; religious concerns are paramount, and threats of family shame and even death (so-called "honor killings") are uplifted. The family members are painted in broad strokes, and are given very little character development by film's end. They seem to mostly exist to be reflexively hostile to the idea of any form of cross-racial dating or marriage.

The actors: Marc Cayce- the Detroit born writer and director- does a decent acting job as Mark, the oldest child of a megachurch pastor. It's unclear what he does for a living besides be the right-hand man of a local thug played by Keith Sweat.

Taral Hicks- nicole, daughter of the pastor, Reverend Walters (Keith David; Ella Joyce plays his wife). She's a college student dating Abie (Tamer Werfali), who is Arab and Muslim. Abie's sister, in a subplot, apparently rebels against the more conservative tenets of Islam (i.e., body coverings) and secretly dates white men while her best friend is a "wild" Latina girl.

Fredro Starr- Brian, nephew of Rev. Walters. Brian's character is set up as a New York native who is staying with the family while he goes to school in Detroit. He's dating Crystal, the Chaldean girl in his school. Her brother is the hot-tempered owner of a liquor store in Detroit, and considers the older Chaldean businessmen of his community cowards for not being more aggressive in their business dealings (a "Godfather"-esque smoky room illustrates this point).

Keith David- As Rev. Walters, he's the wealthy pastor of a Detroit megachurch and owns a select number of small businesses in the city. His family lives in an unidentified suburb. He's knowledgeable about the differences between Muslim Arabs and Chaldeans, and as the film opens he's in a contentious debate with a Chaldean businessman about a pending open bid for a grocery store.

Tiny Lister- in a bit of stunt casting, Lister plays the henchman of a Chaldean liquor store owner. He doesn't get to do much except growl and act tough.

The film seems to alternate between digital film and regular film stock. The establishing shots and an assortment of intimate scenes take advantage of several Detroit-area landmarks, including downtown Detroit, East Dearborn's business districts, local colleges and Belle Isle Park.

Regarding the religious depictions in the film, it is mostly fair. Some members of a local mosque have bit parts, and a young woman flirts with the idea of converting to Islam, but services at the black family's (presumably Protestant) church are not featured, and the Chaldean Catholic culture is not given much screen time. A throwaway line about "black muslims" is included, but no African American muslims are featured in the film.

The film suffers from too many story lines, however well-intended they may be. Some of the principal actors are clearly 30-ish while playing 20-ish college students, which is a bit jarring. Most of the film's co-plots end rather abruptly, and only one ends happily.

great depiction
LKEITH200010 August 2006
This movie highlights events that happen daily in the Detroit area that most people are unaware of or just go blinded-eyed to. It shows the things that blacks of today & in the past have had to deal with to just get along in this world. Its about Love,Hate and Misunderstandings,it also shows a positive side of Detroit that most of the world doesn't get the opportunity to see. These things REALLY happen,I have been a victim of it myself and have seen it happen to friends. If you know anything bout or want to know about life in the D check this movie and for your self, you won't be sorry. In the immortal words of Rodney King "Can We All Just Get Along?"

Good movie to have...
wimpelweed12 July 2009
This is a good movie. A real must see. I enjoyed the story line and the soundtrack is BANGIN'.The movie has a really good positive message. It teaches you to look beyond color and nationality and to accept people for who they are. This film needs to be overseas as well to show how people of different backgrounds can come together and get along. This would help the current race relations in the world. The director was very creative with this story...It's not your typical urban film. Great Job! the acting was okay for the unknown actors in this film. The well known actors all played their roles well. I would've like to have seen more love scenes in the movie between the main characters. This is a must have for your collection. Looking forward to this director's next film.

I loved this movie!!!
capricorn01069317 March 2012
I watched this movie when it first came out but then I thought I'd lost the DVD, I just recently found it again and I have watched it at least twenty times since. I am a huge advocate of interracial dating and this movie just entices me to the max. I am not from Detroit, nor have I traveled there, but I would love to go one day and sight-see. I would definitely recommend this movie.

I love the end of the movie, because, me being a hopeless romantic, I feel like maybe I will have the same luck in an interracial relationship.

I just want to thank Marc Cayce for producing, writing and directing this film...it was just what I needed.

Entertaining movie to watch!
sampson-linda2 July 2009
Forbidden Fruits is a powerful movie about interracial relationships. I never got bored. I was eager to find out what was going to happen next. The story-line is entertaining and captures the racial tension between families. The cast are talented actors who are the perfect choice for this movie.

The cinematography for Forbidden Fruits is impressive. I enjoyed the variety of camera shots that made the visual aspects of the movie look professional. It was great to see beautiful Detroit neighborhoods in the movie instead of the usual ghetto neighborhoods.

I recommend Forbidden Fruits to everyone. After watching the movie people will realize how foolish racial stereotypes are. Watch the movie you will enjoy it!

look in the mirror
cjvolution22 January 2011
I don't understand why no one likes this movie. first, it shows that racism from all sides. and that when we are doing wrong we always find a way to justify it by standing on religion.

when slave holders where ask, via history books , they justified it by saying it was the way of their church! This movie is simply saying its not who you LOVE, its the LOVE its self.

It doesn't matter if you praise GOD, Jehovah, or whom ever. There are all GOD. and he was not picky when he created the Mother or Father of Human beings, he created Adam And Eve. who started all of us!

Second, it is showing that through faith and beliefs all things are possible. Finally, if you have true love, you have everything! If you have HATE, you have nothing but a dark lonely road......

And your point is?????
gabriellej200324 June 2006
The person who wrote the last comment totally missed the boat. You never made a point about why you did not like it. I could respect your comment if you had a true point. So disregard that comment everyone until you hear facts. Marc knows that I am a very critical person and if I say he pulled it off, along with everyone in the movie and on the set, then he did. Most indie films have room for improvement. Let's see you do it better. If you just so happen to be a fellow Detroit filmmaker I definitely challenge you to do better. My point is next time you hear of a feature film being shot in your town, work on the set and you will appreciate the hardship and dedication it takes to actually get a film this far.

Detroiter's stop hating!
sweetsday20 January 2006
I was at the premier of this movie downtown Detroit and I thought the movie touched home from beginning to end. I read a negative comment from another native Detroiter and did not agree at all. I thought the picture quality was advanced and the direction was more professional than expected. I expected to see another low-budget film but was surprised to see how much the film had national theatrical quality. I could see this movie hitting big and making stars out of Detroit actors. There were also a lot of celebrities in this film. I particularly enjoyed Keith David and Deebo is always amusement. I thought Keith Sweat did a good job playing a gangster as well, which also caught me by surprise. This director really captured the real Detroit unlike 8 mile and made the city look good at the same time. I commend that. We need that!!!
