Unique slasher/mystery flick

Warning: Spoilers
Glenville 3 is a continuation of two other slasher flicks i have never seen, but have read about. Basically, it tells the story of a murderous family in a middle of nowhere town in Ohio. One of the killers has died and his father has ordered his long lost brother to continue the killings. The motive for these horrendous crimes is only partially explained, but Anthony spadaccini does a good job of steering clear of slasher movie clichés and creating a flick that's a bit out of the ordinary. The best performance comes from John Larsen as the 'godfather' of the serial killer family and even though his part is small, he does a good job and is really creepy. The flick's only real weakness is the cussing, there's a lot. i guess everyone in ohio uses the f-word, there's cussing every other line. it didn't really detract from the movie, it just got a little annoying after a while.

Too hard to follow

Warning: Spoilers
REVIEW: "Glenville 3" (2001) 76 minutes. Starring Eric Simpson, Debbie Romanelli, John Carroll, Rod Harden, Pamela Butler, Lyle Xayvier, Chad McMahon, Lamar Heard, John Larsen, Michael Kubovcik, Robert Baker.

A slasher movie with about 100 subplots, extremely unlikable characters with self-motivations, and simply put very confusing.

This movie isn't artsy like Hell's Homecoming (the sequel), but still hard to follow. The prologue is really bloody, but I had no idea who these characters were, therefore I didn't care about them when they died.

Abut 15 minutes in, we finally get to the story. Two tabloid journalists (one of them very unprofessional, judging from the amount of times he drops the f-bomb) go to Glenville, Ohio to try and uncover secrets behind several murders thought to be previously solved. Of course, a copycat killer is out there, stalking some teenage girl who is one of the most unlikable scream queens ever. And of course, the police do nothing. Instead, an ex-cop tries to save the day but (pulling a Dr. Loomis) disappears once the action begins.

And there's that post-modern, 90s guess the killer thing. Not that it matters. The killer is obvious from the first few minutes and his motivations are contrived (and much like Scream 3).

The good things about this film are few. The acting is for the most part good (John Larsen is really creepy as a father with a murder complex). The music, composed by the director, is effective and the murders are graphic.

The bad things are many. TOO MUCH PROFANITY!! Every character uses the f-bomb and it's distracting to say the least. The video quality is not good but that might have to do with the budget. None of the characters are likable (let's just say that the "hero" of the movie allowed his colleague to get killed right in front of him due to philosophical differences) so we really don't care if they die or not.

This looks like one of the director's first projects and judging from the blooper reel and behind the scenes clips on the DVD, everyone seemed to have fun making this. But this isn't a good movie by any means. Entertaining I guess.

Rating: 3 out of 10.

Pretty good slasher movie

Warning: Spoilers
GLENVILLE 3 is Anthony Spadaccini's best horror film to date. Though he has since made much better movies, GLENVILLE 3 has everything you would want in a slasher movie: an intelligent script, a variety of memorable characters, gory deaths, and a surprise twist ending. I never found the characters in this movie to be as despicable as some people are suggesting, though Spadaccini could have written a better heroine (Debbie Romanelli does fine as scream queen Sara, but a better character should have been written).

Having not seen the first two Glenville films, I was thrown off by the abrupt presentation of the film's opening 15 minutes. It's basically a continuation of the 2nd movie (I think) and the real story begins after that. I was surprised at the number of subplots in this movie, since it was around an hour and 20 minutes in length. I liked the rap song in the closing credits and the creepy music box that ended the film. The identity of the killer was pretty easy to figure out, but that's only because he was the only one remaining who could have possibly done it.

This is a pretty good slasher movie and I am impressed with Anthony Spadaccini's work, though this is an early effort from him.
