I have read a lot of comments for Channel One and I just wanted to add this:
I was there when the whole idea of having TVs in the classroom ever came about, and having Channel One as a news source geared toward teens & young people in hopes of getting them more involved and informed of the world around them.
Yes, at times it did seem corny. BUT, had it not been for Channel One (At least at my school), half the school would not have been as interested in the first Bush/Clinton elections. Debates were happening daily at our school and we even rounded it off with our own election. That was the first time I ever thought about voting and making myself heard. We also received first hand information on the Gulf War. Something no one thought (at the time) would ever happen.
It was also the first time that myself and other teens in our school ever thought about other countries and that atrosities there. This show made us think and realize that there is a whole other world out there that we need to be prepared for when we leave high school.
But at least Channel One tried to present the news to teens, not too many (if any) Corproate news broadcasts were ever gearing their stuff towards young people.
I do believe that Channel One was sponsored by MTV in the beginning. So they did have that kind of MTV look & Feel.
Some tidbits for you. These newscasters moved on to bigger and better things: Lisa Ling - The View; Anderson Cooper; Serena Atschul - MTV
So try not to blame Channel One too much for being corny, or playing annoying music. At least the original idea of presenting news to young people in (hopefully) ways they can relate to, was a noble one.
