That ain't the way we used to do it

Two teams square off to race their drag cars for a 3 out of 5 race for pink slips. The winner is awarded the loser's car. I caught this show the other night and had to make a few comments. I used to drag race in the late 60's early 70's on the street and the strip. First it is supposed to have a 50's setting yet the cars I saw had many modern tricks like nitrous, modern big slicks, and tricked out suspensions. However, they used the old flag man start instead of a Christmas tree. But the main thing for me was that it seemed the drivers and the mechanics didn't have a clue. I mean the mechanics were using adjustable wrenches to do everything. Being an old time mechanic an adjustable wrench was a last resort and was almost considered a joke wrench. Not a combination wrench or ratchet in sight. Ha,ha. They did not have one single complete race because one or the other car broke on every race. Also the drivers and crew were doing more arguing than racing it seemed like. I guess this show is good for rookie and wannabe drag racers. It was a big joke to me and probably is more so to the modern serious drag racer. Caught another show tonight and have one comment. The guys watching for the winner at the other end evidently are blind. They almost always make a mistake as to how many car lengths the winner won by. Tonight you could plainly see(camera is to the side at the end) the guy win by at least 4 car lengths or more and the guy said he won by 2. They are always doing this. Oh well. But it does seem the crews have gotten a little more savvy lately although they still argue a lot.

Good entertainment with decent racing and lots of theatrics

I have seen many of the episodes and enjoy the show for the racing. When I was street racing in the 80's, it was always heads-up and if you couldn't meet the challenge, you lost. When we got serious about big money, since we didn't race for "pinks", we went to the track where it could be determined by lights and computers. There was no question about launches or finishes.

One episode I have seen twice, one of the opponents was 2 hours late, then said he had to "change his oil" before he could race. While one guy was changing the oil, others were working on the car. That showed two things that I can't stand: Tardiness and Lying. He should have handed over the keys and the title as soon as he showed up. If he had been on time, he could have raced to keep his car. In other racing, if you are not at the line when the flag drops, you lose! NASCAR doesn't wait. Indy doesn't wait. Baja is all about time; If you are not there at YOUR start time, you don't get to run. Since he was allowed to race, he should have been disqualified for lying about the "oil change". It's one thing to bluff about what your car has in it, it's another thing to lie about work you have to do, especially when you are already late.

Although safety is always enforced, there should be a tech inspection. One car always sticks out in my mind because of it's "roll-cage". A roll-cage is a safety devise that is meant to protect the driver as well as stiffen he car. In the event of a rollover at high speeds, an improperly designed and built cage can actually kill the driver. My concern is all the viewers that see it as an example of a car that is allowed to run with an improper cage.

Of course I will continue to watch the show, but wish they used the lights and required inspections. It would eliminate most of the dramatics and bring the focus more on the racing. I do recommend it for anyone wanting a glimpse into the amateur racing world.

Love the cars and the racing,......

Since I love cars and racing, I like this show. It gives great insight into what can be done with an idea. Perhaps a shade arbitrary and heavy handed at times, but all in all an enjoyable experience. I personally would never risk my car without a bit more negotiating power on my side, but, obviously some people seem to think the exposure is worth the risk. When I was young, we all street raced and it was nothing like this. Most of the time, no money or 'pinks' were involved as we were all too broke. In the 70s I drove a 12 second '55 Chevy on the street and I took on all comers, but I can't remember one time that it was for more than bragging rights. That was enough. Still, PINKS will remain at the top of my favorite shows list, but PASS TIME is up there too!
