Director of Video Comics

Actually Dana was the Producer of Video Comics, not the Director. Because of technical problems with the post production, she asked me to fill in as Director for the completion of all the shows. I think initially there were about 70 Video Comics shows and they were edited over and over again to make many different combinations. This was a project that I worked on after directing many of the live QUBE programs around 1977 through 1979. These programs included Talent Search, which was produced by Bob Morton, later Producer for the Letterman Show, and Celebration, QUBE's biggest budget show which was hosted by Rob Weller, and also Columbus Alive, which was produced by Ron Giles who later became Executive Producer of QVC. Why search the comic shops? Just turn on Nickelodeon!

OK, so the usual fare shown on Video Comics was severely limited, but it was actually interesting to read the comics panels on screen while listening to the voice-over actors. At least they didn't try to pseudo-animate the comics panels like the producers of that Marvel Super-Heroes show attempted to do in the mid-60s.

In the early days of Nickelodeon, this was a mainstay along with Pinwheel and You Can't Do That On Television. I'm sure there were a few others, but memory does not recall. The idea of reading comics on TV may seem odd and would be if not for the voice-over of the characters. The voices of Sugar and Spike are memorable. All you comics fans, just admit that you imagine what a character might sound like as you read your comics. And if you ever read any of the comics featured on VC, you can put a voice to the character.

Not exactly groundbreaking, but fun stuff nevertheless.
