Ignacio Ortiz is a storyteller, no doubt about that. But this one is his masterpiece at the moment. We get to see a work following "Cuentos de hadas para dormir cocodrilos" but enhancing it and achieving a film far superior. Without denying his references to Shakespeare and Lowry, Ortiz make an entropic world, heir of Rulfo's Comala and hence Mitl Valdez' "Los Confines". El Parian is a little home town of few characters but a whole bunch of stories that come together in a strong tissue thanks to the good editing of the film. Sometimes very surrealistic, like the very essence of Mexico, the passages come in the story with equal tragedy and comedy, as allegories of deep concepts, all portrayed in an outstanding acting job by one of the better crews assembled. Alejandro Calva and Ana Graham may be an odd couple but a strong and believable one. Also some high points are the cinematography by Serguei Saldivar Tanaka and the music score by Lucía Alvarez, both with a fine gusto. A total triumph.
