Featuring no dragons of any kind.
BA_Harrison28 April 2020
Those expecting a daft slice of Brucesploitation in which the main character uses super-powers to battle his enemies will be sorely disappointed: the title Super Dragon has absolutely nothing to do with its content. This film is, in fact, a traditional kung fu flick from Taiwan concerning a group of martial artists hired to escort a valuable consignment to its destination. A traitor in their midst has resulted in a series of robberies (which makes one wonder why people keep on hiring them), and the hunt is on to find out who it is. Also serving to complicate matters: a pair of thieves who team up with the escorts, and a young woman, The Invincible Spear (Polly Ling-Feng Shang-Kuan), who is looking for the man who murdered her father.

The plot for this one gets very convoluted at times, and for much of the film I struggled to follow what was happening and to whom. Fortunately, there is plenty of fighting involved, most of which is rather good, with plenty of weapon work and acrobatics; this surfeit of kung fu action helps to keep things reasonably entertaining even when you haven't the foggiest what is going on. It all leads to a climactic battle to the death (as these films usually do) in which the identity of the villain is finally revealed. And I still didn't have a clue who he was!

4.5/10, rounded up to 5 for the rousing music, which is up there with John Williams' best work.

Buried treasure(s)...
poe-488334 January 2016
Warning: Spoilers
In SUPER DRAGON, Yueh Hua plays Kue, one of five warriors who work as "escorts" (bodyguards or payroll guards). He sleeps with his eyes open, as befits an escort. The five brothers agree to deliver a box of valuables to a local magistrate, despite their reservations: They've been robbed several times in the recent past (which, by all rights, should give one pause when it comes time to decide which Escort Company you're going to employ to deliver your valuables...). When a pair of thieves, Dinny (?) and Ma, steal a flag whose shaft is filled with pearls, the five escorts catch up with them at the shop of a fence, Chang, and proceed to wreck the place. The 2 thieves are interrogated and Dinny(?) agrees to lead them to the bodies of the traitors who told them about the pearls. Kue and another escort are ambushed and Kue is buried in an avalanche. It's at this point that the cute Miss Wang pops up, looking to avenge the death of her father. The bodies are finally found- and a masked man in black literally explodes from hiding in one of the coffins. Lo Lieh also pops up before all's said and done. Overall, not a bad way to run down your Life Clock.

Super Dragon

This Taiwanese martial arts film is centred on five martial arts experts who work for an escort union. It is there job to deliver valuable merchandise. Unfortunately a number of recent jobs have not gone to plan and the items they were transporting were stolen... the only explanation is that there is a traitor in the organisation. Once again they are intercepted by thieves but after a confrontation one of them agrees to help identify the traitor. Later they are joined by a woman who is convinced that one of them killed her father; she is determined to have her revenge.

I wasn't expecting too much from this film but it wasn't too bad. The central plot is solid enough and serves to deliver plenty of excuses for enjoyable martial arts action. It is clearly a fairly low budget film; the locations aren't very varied and given the fluctuating light levels at times no film was 'wasted' reshooting anything that didn't look good. The cast did a solid job as far as the action was concerned; as the version of the film I watched had been dubbed into English. Strangely the original music had also been replaced in places... this was blatantly obvious as parts of the soundtrack from 'Star Wars' were used! Overall I'd hardly call this a must see film but it is fun enough and as the action isn't that brutal it can be enjoyed by younger viewers too.

The escort company has a traitor among them and this is bad for business

I first watched this movie back in 2017 and made notes but did not write a review. This was because of confusion with another movie with the same title also known as 1977 "Dynasty" or "Ming Dynasty". Fans of this genre are well aware of this problem. Back during the VHS rental craze many of these movies were boxed with any title or any picture to draw the customer's attention. Realistic labeling was not practiced back then. Today I was sorting my collection, resolved past issues, and added my review. The other reviews here are all for the right movie.

My copy is a digital file that plays on a HDTV in 4:3 format. The resolution is typical of an old VHS tape and the color is bright but sometimes washed out to mostly green tint. It is dubbed into English. The voices are not familiar but the dubbing is good because they are not cartoonish or otherwise annoying.

The movie starts with a man playing a flute. A few more characters are quickly introduced then the story begins. An escort company takes a big job but there is concern over recent robberies. Needless to say what happens next. Subsequently the story becomes a mystery about who is the traitor. Polly does not enter the story until about 30 minutes in.

The fights are all good and above average. They use swords, spears, and fists. There were enough fights but also room for more. The movie is certainly low budget yet doesn't appear cheap.

There is nothing special about the movie, no memorable scenes and no fights you would want to rewind and watch again immediately. On the positive side, there were also no fast forward button moments for me. This all adds up to another average movie but only for fans of martial arts movies of the golden age from 1967 to 1984.

Not one dragon meme in this movie nor any Shaolin meme, nor anything "Super".. so various english titles using words of Shaolin Super Dragon are unexplainable

Chinese title " The wind is surging all over the hub "??

However Lots of plot twists for enjoyable kung fu fighting
