A Great Example of Post-Hippie Erotica

Producer/Director Nick Phillips (in this case, crediting himself as Nick Millard) made a number of "fetish" erotic films from the mid 1960s until the mid 70s, each one getting a little "harder" as the years went by. His films were also typically shot without live sound, so the audio track is voice-over with a jazzy sax music accompaniment. "Pleaures of a Woman" is a series of erotic encounters between a young woman and her recently-widowed aunt, played by the Queen of 70s Erotica (at least in my books!) Uschi Digart. The love scenes are lengthy and fairly risqué for the time, with plenty of full nudity - Phillips takes full advantage of Uschi's buxom talents, and she doesn't disappoint! I have this movie on DVD from Alternative Cinema, which also contains a modern-day remake starring Misty Mundae. Personally, I like the 1972 version better - but I'm a huge fan of Uschi Digart. Image quality is great, as it is on the other Nick Phillips films that I have on DVD.

Being a recent convert to the eccentric movies of Nick Millard or Phillips, I came to this expecting more than I got. There are a few possible reasons. It may have been I was simply not in the right mood when I watched this. It may have been that after three or four of the man's films, there are becoming a little passé but much more likely is that this is a later film with more professional actors and I was drawn to the less rehearsed aspect of the earlier ones. Whatever, Uschi Digard is fine (big breasts don't happen to be one of my particular interests) the voice over dialogue and locations as off the wall as ever but the fetish elements didn't work so well and although the photography as great as ever, maybe a little repetitive. Always worth a watch though and certainly one of the more interesting sex film makers of the sixties or seventies.

Cool showcase for the singular Uschi Digard

Sweet and innocent college student Gwen (yummy brunette Lynn Harris) meets her more worldly, aggressive, and passionate sexual adventuress aunt Martine (the one and only Uschi Digard in peak smolderingly hot and predatory form) at the reading for her late uncle's will. Gwen becomes infatuated with Martine and soon gets caught up in Martine's wild swinging world of wanton sex and potent pills. Writer/director Nick Philips relates this simple story in his customary stark and unadorned no-frills style that eschews unnecessary pretense and filler in favor of just getting down to the bawdy basics: There's copious tasty female nudity, a memorably raunchy heterosexual coupling between Gwen and her boyfriend, and, of course, several pleasingly torrid lesbian make-out sessions involving Gwen and Martine (Uschi also does a nice solo masturbation set piece with a shoe). Naturally, a groovy free-form jazzy score accompanies the lurid on-screen action and Philips indulges his trademark kinky fetish for shiny knee-high leather boots. The profane and cynical narration greatly enhances the overall jaded tone while the surprise downbeat ending packs quite a wicked punch. Best of all, this film makes for an excellent vehicle for Digard's amazing physical attributes (i.e., exquisitely enormous breasts) and intoxicating sensuous presence. Moreover, we even get a valid central message about how one evil and decadent person can have a profoundly toxic impact on another more pure and naive individual. Highly recommended viewing for Uschi fans.
