Rekha ( hough being a Christian in real life ) has typical South Indian looks . She comes to Chennai and starts living in a rented complex . Goundarmani , Kamala Kamesh , Senthil , Mohan etc are her co - renters. Mohan is an engineer without much luck. Rekha being very helpful and liberal with money helps every one financially . She manages to secure Mohan a big job. He proposes to her .She refuses saying she has a terminal disease and she might die any minute .
She has run away from her rich father and mother ( Sukumari ) to spare them this sad story . Though shocked , Mohan insists and both get married. The doctor warns Mohan that any heavy emotions will further Rekha's medical problems .
On Rekha's insistence he marries again to beget a child . He marries golden hearted prostitute Amala who urges him to incline to wards Rekha.
In this process Rekha gets pregnant but dies in childbirth . When Amala is about to leave Mohan's place , both realise that the child cannot live without a mother and amala ends up living with Mohan for ever .Both Rekha and Amala wear nice sarees through out .
Mohan is on top of this role as a carefree jobless youth in the beginning , responsible engineer , sensitive husband and a sad widower .
