The Evil Within
claudio_carvalho12 June 2010
The joiner Amauri (Ricardo Perez) lives in a small farm in the countryside of São Paulo with his wife Leda (Ieda Maria) and his religious brother Egydio (Regis Monteiro). Amauri hires the maid Maria Imaculada (Cris Matos), a young woman from Salvador, to help the stressed Leda in the housework. However, when she arrives, the flowers, trees, birds, fishes and small animals in the area die. Egydio is reading a book written by Joe Coffin where the soul of a raped deceased woman reincarnates full of anger in the body of a young woman seeking revenge against men and he sees similarities with Maria Imaculada, who secretly worships the devil in her room. Meanwhile a strange priest (José Mojica Marins) gives a medal to Amauri in the local chapel for his self-protection. When the son of Leda and Amauri, Marcílio (Fábio Ferreira), comes to the farm to spend a week vacation with his virgin fiancée Cláudia (Débora Mikytyn), Imaculada sees an easy victim and seduces the youngster and forces him to rape and kill Cláudia. The scared Egydio prays to God asking for help and the Cavaleiro do Medo (Fear Knight - José Mojica Marins) brings a holy stiletto to him to destroy the evil.

"Contos de Horror" is a B (or Z?) cult-movie of Joe Coffin that narrates the story like the Crypt Keeper of "Tales from the Crypt". The director Andrea Pasquini and the cast are amateurish, with the exception of Regis Monteiro and José Mojica Marins; however, the direction and the performances are above average, despite some histrionic moments. The special effects are very poor; but despite the extremely low-budget, this film works very well and entertains. My vote is seven.
