Interesting Footage of Venice
Snow Leopard3 March 2005
Venice is such a unique and interesting city that – at least for those of us who have never been there - almost any footage of the city will probably seem interesting. Here, instead of a studio re-creation of the city's canals and gondolas for a fictional picture, there is actual footage of men and women from over a century ago. Not a lot happens, but it is an interesting look at the distinctive city and some of its familiar images.

The 30 seconds or so of footage is set on a canal with a couple of gondolas, with a bridge over the canal in the background. It has an authentic and atmospheric feel to it, and its original viewers would most likely have found it even more of a pleasure to see a moving picture from someplace they had never been.

The action focuses primarily on one of the gondolas, and in itself it is rather bland. But the setting and the atmosphere make it worth seeing.

Venise, tramway sur le Grand Canal (1896)

The title pretty much tells you what's going on in this Lumiere Brothers film. There's a camera stationed on the Grand Canal as we get a terrific view of it as well as some of the activities on it. We see several boats go by the camera and in the background we get to see some buildings as well as a terrific looking bridge. If you're a fan of these actuality movies then I'm sure you'll enjoy this one as there's plenty of interesting things going on. The look of the boats was quite entertaining but there's no question that the highlight is the bridge that graces the background. There's obviously nothing ground-breaking here but it's worth watching.
