The sound has been found in the form of an old Edisonian recording cylinder. The cylinder was repaired, then Walter Murch ACE MPSE synced the film to the correct music in (I believe) 2002. Total running time is approximately 17 seconds.

Venice is such a unique and interesting city that at least for those of us who have never been there - almost any footage of the city will probably seem interesting. Here, instead of a studio re-creation of the city's canals and gondolas for a fictional picture, there is actual footage of men and women from over a century ago. Not a lot happens, but it is an interesting look at the distinctive city and some of its familiar images.
The 30 seconds or so of footage is set on a canal with a couple of gondolas, with a bridge over the canal in the background. It has an authentic and atmospheric feel to it, and its original viewers would most likely have found it even more of a pleasure to see a moving picture from someplace they had never been.
The action focuses primarily on one of the gondolas, and in itself it is rather bland. But the setting and the atmosphere make it worth seeing.
