Excellent Documentary Series
Venge28 March 2020
It is not often that I review a documentary series, but I had to make an exception for this great production. The "Far From Home" series is actually composed of 3 films. In chronological order, they are "Far From Home: Sam's Army", "Far From Home: The Battle of Vimy Ridge", and "Far From Home: The Last 100 Days". The series is filled with unique footage that I have not seen anywhere else, and I have watched dozens of hours of WW1 documentaries. Paul Gross, of "Passchendaele" and "Due South" fame, does a steady and low key job of narration, making the series very easy to listen to. Good voice actors reading the actual words of soldiers, officers, politicians and citizens of the era, make the series come to life, even though on occasion, the accents seem a little contrived. This series should be standard watching for every Canadian high school history class.
