OK production values but lousy porn film
lor_4 April 2011
Most '70s porn quickies look terrible, shot in some non-set with a card table and sheets hanging from the walls in a non-attempt to simulate reality, when it's only XXX action that matters. ALL THE SENATOR'S GIRLS foolishly takes an opposite approach, expecting fans back in the day to leave the theater "humming the yacht", an expensive backdrop for crappy porn.

Nominal plot line is the very tired & self-serving notion of self-righteousness adopted by many pornographers. No-namer "Glenn Swallow" toplines as a California candidate for the U.S. senate Frank Parsons, who ends the film with a rousing (and ultra-trite) speech attacking pornography and vowing, if elected, to stamp it out. I've heard this sanctimonious portrayal of hypocrisy a hundred times, most recently (and nearly verbatim) in the pretentious 2010 porn film about a similar crusading senator, SANITORIUM.

Most of the film takes place on the luxurious yacht S.S. Waterbed, owned by sleazy & obese millionaire Gaylord Wheeler, who has the would-be senator all bought and paid for. Whether the cast is humping in Parsons' office or on the yacht it's strictly unarousing mechanical sex.

The only compliment I can accord this junk is that at least the thesps display clean feet during the sex scenes, putting it one small step above the usual Dirty Feet syndrome of 1-day wonders. Virginia Winter is sexy as Parsons' secretary, while IMDb reflects confusion over which porn starlet played the attractive Sue, either journey woman Valerie Parker or the excellent star Suzannah French of the all-time classic THE OTHER SIDE OF JULIE - I vote for the latter as being correct. It hardly matters, as this is an off day in anyone's filmography.

Rendering SENATOR'S GIRLS unwatchable is the participation of "Rod Harris" as the corn-pone Wheeler. Watching an old, incredibly obese cretin making love to beautiful women is not my cup of tea, and meant to insult the Adult Cinema patrons back in the day. Director having taking the credit "En Cognito" was a wise move.

Junk is available on a choice of video two-fers, either Vol. 165 of Something Weird's Dragon Art Theatre series or paired with the horrible THE PRESIDENTIAL PEEPERS on an overpriced After Hours Cinema DVD that has Darian Caine's picture misleadingly displayed on the cover. There's also a stand-alone VCX edition, proving that public domain porn indeed has an afterlife, irregardless of quality.
