ROSE, BE MY LOVE is a slow-moving romantic melodrama from the Shaw Brothers stable, recently made freely available for viewing on the official Shaw Brothers Universe Youtube channel (complete with English subtitles!). Seen today, it's barely recognisable from the kind of full-blooded action epics that Shaw would become renowned for just a few years later; it has more in common with '50s cinema than anything approaching modernity. It tells a typical story of a young woman who falls in love and experiences all manner of tragedy in her life while at the same time trying to make the best of things. The production values are fine and the emphasis on family is touching, but there's little here of interest otherwise.
