GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER is the precursor to FLOP IDOL, LAME ACADEMY and all those other shows that have made mediocre people into pop stars but it's easy to spot a vital ingredient that's missing with this show - Sex appeal
I had a mate who attended the final of this show ( Hi Jamie ) and no he wasn't one of the finalists he was an audience member which was the only reason I watched , just to see if I could spot him . A bizarre reason for watching but a compelling enough one if the acts were anything to go by - They were very average at best with the best of a bad bunch a psychiatric nurse who had a good enough voice as a soul singer and a young blonde women who did a ballad
The winners on the night were a " rock band " called Marlo and how can I put it kindly ? They were totally rank and performed a song called How Do I Know Who You Are ? The fact that I can recall it six years after it was performed show's how bad it was . Does anyone remember the channel 4 sketch show ABSOLUTELY ? They had a spoof band of computer geeks ; " Computer operators by day we work nine till five and we love to groove and dig level 42 ... " Well that's what Marlo reminded me of and their attempts of choreography made them look as bad as they sounded : " How do I know who you are ... " followed by a bass break where the band members jerk their heads from left to right making them appear like idiots rather than rock gods .
There are many connections between GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER and the shows that followed it a couple of years later but POP IDOL managed to be a success by it's teasing hype . Everyone remembers the tagline " Nigel choose me " which made people sit up and wonder what this meant , it whetted their appetites and burned into their brains as to what this referred too and when it was revealed what " Nigel choose me " was all about they stayed to watch out of curiosity while later shows like POP STARS and THE X FACTOR used either sex appeal ( Girls Aloud - Boy are they hot SSSSSSSSSSSS ) or awful auditions to sell records or keep up viewing figures . The fact that I'm the first person to comment on this show nearly seven years after it was broadcast or the fact that you can type in " Marlo " into any search engine to find nothing on the band tells its own story
