A gritty mystery, strong episode.
Sleepin_Dragon22 March 2023
The body of a coal miner, missing for over a decade is found in a mine, his son Colin Farr is sent off the rails by the news, it just so happens that Colin is being taught by Ellie.

Very gritty, it's an intriguing mystery, one that holds up very well with time. There's a lot of Northern grit to enjoy, from the characters, to the setting, it works very well.

Aside from the mystery, you have The Peter and Ellie story, this is where you see their relationship start to break down, they never seemed well suited or happy, this seems like the beginning of the end for them.

The ending is very dramatic, it works so well, it isn't the fastest paced episode you'll see, but the ending will definitely grab your attention.

Andy isn't actually visible all that much here, it's more Ellie that drives the story.

Joy Brook was good as Stella, but Joe Duttine definitely steals the show as Colin, he has so much charisma, excellent performance from him.

8/10.

Not brilliant but not the pits either

More than 20 years on and I have taken to watching an episode of this each day.

Although not so much with this story, it is great to see so many actors that guest d in Midsomer Murders at around the same time.

Having said that, this is probably the weakest story yet which is a shame as, being a series opener you would think it would be stronger With Warren Clarke and his sarcastic remarks missing for much of the first part of the show, it is the earthy Joy Brook that catches the eye. (such a shame she hasn't done more TV work) but the story does seem slow for the first hour and also quite similar to an episode of Vera set in a mining village but this was shown several years before.

Don't let this one disappointment put you off from watching further but Susannah Corbett does seem bored, wanting something more to get her teeth into.

Another great episode

This is one of the better Dalziel and Pascoe episodes. Some of the later ones get rather too complicated but this one is quite clear with well-drawn (and well-acted) characters. Dalziel is his usual obnoxious (and thoroughly enjoyable) self and the patient Peter Pascoe gets a chance to strike out on his own. His irritating wife interferes in the case, which ends in a rather exciting way in a flooded mine.

This series always offers good value for the viewer.

a bit boring

I had never seen an Dalziel and Pascoe film until now and I must say I probably won't see many more. I hoped for a kind of Hercule Poirot kind of movie but it was more a drama movie instead of a thriller/ detective. I also hoped to see some suspense scenes but most scenes were about the family problems. At the end it actually got interesting but It was to late..

If you prefer drama over suspense watch this, otherwise rent a Hercule Poirot movie.
